Cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury (CIRI), a cause of cerebral dysfunction during cerebral infarction treatment, is closely associated with mitochondrial viscosity and hydrogen peroxide (HO). However, the accurate measurement of mitochondrial viscosity and HO levels in CIRI is challenging because of the lack of sufficient selectivity and blood-brain barrier (BBB) penetration of existing monitoring tools related to CIRI, hampering the exploration of the role of mitochondrial viscosity and HO in CIRI. To address this issue, we designed an activatable fluorescent probe, mitochondria-targeting styryl-quinolin-ium (), with excellent properties including high selectivity, mitochondrial targeting, and BBB penetration, for the visualization of mitochondrial viscosity and HO in the brain.

Scutula are characteristic lesions of tinea favosa or favus; the most frequently identified causative organism is Trichophyton schoenleinii. Although scutula-like lesions were described in Microsporum gypseum infection, their presence on glabrous skin in a patient with SLE has not been reported previously. We report a case of tinea infection with scutula-like lesions caused by Microsporum gypseum in a SLE patient, who was treated with topical terbinafine cream, and the lesions resolved completely.

In this paper, we investigate the dynamics of tear film and the associated temperature variation for partial blinks. We investigate the mechanism of fluid supply during partial blink cycles, and compare the film thickness with observation in vivo. We find that varying the thickness of the fluid layer beneath the moving upper lid improves the agreement for the in vivo measurement of tear film thickness after a half blink.

We present a simple and effective method for the synthesis of nanostructured Fe(3)O(4) micron-spheres (NFMSs) by annealing hydrothermally formed FeCO(3) spheres in argon. The phase structure, particle size, and magnetic properties of the product have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and by means of a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID). The results have shown that the as-obtained NFMSs have a diameter of about 5 μm and are composed of nanometer-sized porous lamellae.

A versatile method was developed to synthesize nickel silicate, silica, and silica-nickel composite porous hollow spheres by using silica spheres as templates. In the preparation, silica spheres were treated with a mixture of NiSO(4)·6H(2)O and NH(3)·H(2)O. The nickel-based ingredient reacted with the silica to form a shell while the alkaline solution could remove the silica core, thus forming the nickel silicate hollow spheres.
