Measurement of curvature and twist is an important aspect in the study of object deformation. In recent years, several methods have been proposed to determine curvature and twist of a deformed object using digital shearography. Here we propose a novel method to determine the curvature and twist of a deformed object using digital holography and a complex phasor.

With the use of a computer algorithm, moiré fringes may be derived digitally from the fringes that are projected onto a reference surface and onto an object surface. Successful use of the beam-splitting cube for these optical methods is attributed to the refraction of the two split beams that exit from the two adjacent faces of the cube.

Claudins are major structural constituents of TJs and belong to a large family of tetra-spanning membrane proteins that have two predicted extracellular loops (ELs). Given that claudin-1 is widely expressed in epithelia, we further defined the role of its EL domains in determining TJ function.

In the holographic carrier fringe technique, difficulty in prescribing a suitable movement of the light source may be alleviated through visualization of the moiré fringes that are reconstructed by slight displacement of two overlaid families of ellipsoids in a holodiagram. Because shearography is the first differential of holography, it is often impractical to perform two successive optical differentiations on the ellipsoids to visualize the shearographic carrier fringes.

Conditions for immunoaffinity clean-up, HPLC and photo-derivatization were optimized in this study and successfully applied in assessment of airborne mycotoxins from a poultry house in Dalian, China. Fifty-two air samples were collected with AGI-30 air samplers using pure water as collection media.

Rigid-body displacement in 3D space consists of both in-plane and out-of-plane components. The presence of an in-plane displacement component results in a shift of the center of the image displacement vector, while the slope of the image displacement vector is related to the out-of-plane displacement component.

One set of substrates used in this effort includes alpha-trimethylsilyl ether terminated, polymethylene- and polyethylenoxy-tethered phthalimides and 2,3-naphthalimides. Photocyclization reactions of the polyethylenoxy-linked phthalimides and naphthalimides were observed to take place in higher chemical yields and with larger quantum efficiencies than those of analogs containing polymethylene tethers of near equal length.

The glycated form of a basic recombinant humanized monoclonal antibody (rhuMAb) was separated and quantitated by boronate affinity chromatography using optimized shielding reagents. Characterization on the isolated glycated material by peptide mapping analysis, using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) sequencing techniques, identified eight reactive lysine primary amine sites. The glycation reaction extent was similar among the various reactive sites, ranging from approximately 1 to 12%, and a single histidine residue separated the most and least reactive sites.

No previous studies have examined whether air pollution or allergen exposure alters methylation of these two genes in vivo. We hypothesized that diesel exhaust particles (DEP) would induce hypermethylation of the IFN-gamma promoter and hypomethylation of IL-4 in CD4+ T cells among mice sensitized to the fungus allergen Aspergillus fumigatus.

Deubiquitinating enzyme A (DUBA), an ovarian tumor domain-containing deubiquitinating enzyme, was discovered in a small interfering RNA-based screen as a regulator of IFN-I production. Reduction of DUBA augmented the PRR-induced IFN-I response, whereas ectopic expression of DUBA had the converse effect.

A novel pH-sensitive nanogel based on pectin cross-linked with glutaraldehyde (PT-GA) was designed and synthesized for drug delivery. Transmission electron microscope observation shows that the nano-sized gel particles exhibit a spherical morphology. The optical absorbance study of nanogel suspension reveals its pH sensitivity.

Aims: To investigate antifungal activity of a novel compound (named as CF66I provisionally) against plant pathogenic fungi, mainly including Fusarium sp., Colletotrichum lindemuthianum, Rhizoctonia solani, etc.
Methods And Results: Minimal inhibition concentrations (MIC) and minimal fungicidal concentrations (MFC) of CF66I for each fungi were determined using serial broth dilution method.
We describe a novel method of processing complex phasors in digital holographic interferometry (DHI). Unlike the commonly used digital phase subtraction method that operates on the phase itself, the proposed method operates on the complex phasor instead. Two temporal phase retrieval algorithms are developed in which the complex phasor of each pixel is measured and analyzed as a function of time.

Objective: To identify the mutations of ED1 gene in a family with X-linked hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia
Methods: Eight coding exons of ED1 gene of two patients with clinically confirmed X-linked hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia, their parents, and 100 unrelated population-matched control were amplified by polymerase chain reaction. The products were further analyzed by direct sequencing.
Results: Two patients with X-linked hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia in this pedigree showed a point mutation at nucleotide 1 045 ( A > G) .
Background: Acne is a chronic inflammatory disease of the pilosebaceous follicles. Recent studies bring us increasing evidences that hereditary factors play an important but indirect role in acne.
Objective: To investigate the possible role of genetic factors in the pathogenesis of acne vulgaris in Chinese Han ethnic group.
Fibroblast activation protein (FAP) and dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) are highly homologous serine proteases of the prolyl peptidase family and therapeutic targets for cancer and diabetes, respectively. Both proteases display dipeptidyl peptidase activity, but FAP alone has endopeptidase activity. FAP Ala657, which corresponds to DPP-4 Asp663, is important for endopeptidase activity; however, its specific role remains unclear, and it is unknown whether conserved DPP-4 substrate binding residues support FAP endopeptidase activity.

To establish the correlation between the images, numerical techniques are used to locate an initially square image subset in a reference image. In this process, choosing appropriate coordinates is of fundamental importance to ensure accurate results.

The structure-activity relationship of various N-acyl-Gly-, N-acyl-Sar-, and N-blocked-boroPro derivatives against three prolyl peptidases was explored. Several N-acyl-Gly- and N-blocked-boroPro compounds showed low nanomolar inhibitory activity against fibroblast activation protein (FAP) and prolyl oligopeptidase (POP) and selectivity against dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP4). N-Acyl-Sar-boroPro analogs retained selectivity against DPP4 and potent POP inhibitory activity but displayed decreased FAP inhibitory activity.

Lantibiotics are ribosomally synthesized peptides that undergo posttranslational modifications to their mature, antimicrobial form. They are characterized by the unique amino acids lanthionine and methyllanthionine, introduced by means of dehydration of Ser/Thr residues followed by reaction of the resulting dehydro amino acids with cysteines to form thioether linkages. Two-component lantibiotics use two peptides that are each posttranslationally modified to yield two functionally distinct products that act in synergy to provide bactericidal activity.
