We present a fast, patient-specific methodology for uncertainty quantification in electrophysiology, aimed at meeting the time constraints of clinical practitioners. We focus on computing the statistics of the activation map, given the uncertainties associated with the conductivity tensor modeling the fiber orientation in the heart. We use a fast parallel solution method implemented on a graphics processing unit for the eikonal approximation, in order to compute the activation map and to sample the random fiber field with correlation on the basis of geodesic distances.

Chromatin modifications are critical for the establishment and maintenance of differentiation programs. G9a, the enzyme responsible for histone H3 lysine 9 dimethylation in mammalian euchromatin, exists as two isoforms with differential inclusion of exon 10 (E10) through alternative splicing. We find that the G9a methyltransferase is required for differentiation of the mouse neuronal cell line N2a and that E10 inclusion increases during neuronal differentiation of cultured cells, as well as in the developing mouse brain.

Androgens can protect neurones from injury, although androgen neuroprotection is not well characterised in terms of either specificity or mechanism. In the present study, we compared the ability of androgens to protect neurones against a panel of insults, empirically determined to induce cell death by apoptotic or non-apoptotic mechanisms. Three criteria defining but not inclusive of apoptosis are: protection by caspase inhibition, protection by protein synthesis inhibition and the presence of pyknotic nuclei.

Breast tumors are usually classified according to their response to estrogens as hormone-dependent or -independent. In this work, we investigated the role of the proinflammatory cytokine TNF-alpha on the estrogen-receptor-positive T47D breast ductal tumor cells. We have found that TNF-alpha exerts a mitogenic effect, inducing cyclin D1 expression and activation of the transcription factor NF-kappaB.

Mouse mammary tumor virus (LA) induces pregnancy-dependent mammary tumors that progress toward autonomy. Here we show that in virgin females, pregnancy-dependent tumor transplants are able to remain dormant for up to 300 days. During that period, these tumors synthesize DNA, express high levels of estrogen and progesterone receptors (ER+PR+) and are able to resume growth after hormone stimulation.

Leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) is a multifunctional glycoprotein that displays multiple biological activities in different cell types, but to date there has been no report on its expression in the normal mammary gland. In this study we found that LIF is expressed at low but detectable levels in postpubertal, adult virgin, and pregnant mouse mammary glands. However, LIF expression drops after parturition to become almost undetectable in lactating glands.

It is well established that parenteral treatment of female zebra finch chicks with estradiol masculinizes their song control nuclei and that as adults they are capable of song. Concern over the widespread use of putative environmental estrogens caused us to ask whether oral exposure to estrogens (a natural route of exposure) could produce similar effects. We dosed chicks orally with estradiol benzoate (EB; 1, 10, 100, and 1000 nmol/g of body mass per day, days 5-11 posthatch), the non-ionic surfactant octylphenol (100 and 1000 nmol/g), or the pesticides methoxychlor (100 and 1000 nmol/g) and dicofol (100 nmol/g) and measured their song control nuclei as adults.

We determined whether short-term, posthatch oral exposure to estradiol benzoate (EB) or the industrial surfactant octylphenol (OP) could impair the reproductive performance of zebra finches. If so, naturally occurring phytoestrogens and xenoestrogens might influence reproduction in wild populations. Chicks were given oral administration of 10 or 100 nmol EB per gram of body mass (earlier work showed the latter to be the minimum oral dose required to maximally masculinize female song nuclei) or an equimolar amount of OP daily from 5 through 11 days of age.
