Background: To determine if face, head, or neck burns increases risk of persistent sleep disordered breathing (SDB) or obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) after adenotonsillectomy.

Methods: The TriNetX database was used to gather data for patients who had face, head, or neck burn including mouth and pharynx and history of sleep study with adenotonsillectomy. A comparison of persistent SDB or OSA was done between cohort 1, a group with sleep study and adenotonsillectomy after burn injury, and cohort 2, a group with treatment before a burn.

Leucine - rich repeat containing 45 protein (LRRC45) protein localizes at the proximal end of centrioles and forms a component of the proteinaceous linker between them, with an important role in centrosome cohesion. In addition, a pool of it localizes at the distal appendages of the modified parent centriole that forms the primary cilium and it has essential functions in the establishment of the transition zone and axonemal extension during early ciliogenesis. Diabetes affects metabolism and metabolite concentrations in multiple organs. Previous preclinical studies have shown that receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE, gene symbol Ager) and its cytoplasmic domain binding partner, Diaphanous-1 (DIAPH1), are key mediators of diabetic micro- and macro-vascular complications. In this study, we used H-Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS) and chemical shift encoded (CSE) Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to investigate the metabolite and water-fat fraction in the heart and hind limb muscle in a murine model of type 1 diabetes (T1D) and to determine if the metabolite changes in the heart and hind limb are influenced by (a) deletion of Ager or Diaph1 and (b) pharmacological blockade of RAGE-DIAPH1 interaction in mice.

Diversifying the chaplain workforce in hospital spiritual care departments and Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) programs is essential for meeting the needs of a religiously diverse population in the USA. We interviewed seven total participants, including two Somali Muslim chaplain students and their Muslim and Christian chaplain educators in one CPE program. Participants described their personal journeys and motivations for pursuing careers in healthcare chaplaincy, their impact on hospitalized patients, and the role of expanding perspectives for those with little prior exposure to Somali Muslim faith leaders.

As a result of the United States withdrawal from Afghanistan in fall 2021, 1,260 Afghan evacuees arrived in Minnesota between October 2021 and February 2022. Several contextual factors including an overtaxed health system under duress from COVID-19 and uncertain benefit eligibility prompted a coordinated public health response to appropriately address the acute and pressing medical concerns of our new neighbors. This community case study describes the State of Minnesota's cross-sectoral response that created a welcoming environment, identified public health concerns, and addressed acute medical needs.

Inter-organelle contact and communication between mitochondria and sarco/endoplasmic reticulum (SR/ER) maintain cellular homeostasis and are profoundly disturbed during tissue ischemia. We tested the hypothesis that the formin Diaphanous-1 (DIAPH1), which regulates actin dynamics, signal transduction and metabolic functions, contributes to these processes. We demonstrate that DIAPH1 interacts directly with Mitofusin-2 (MFN2) to shorten mitochondria-SR/ER distance, thereby enhancing mitochondria-ER contact in cells including cardiomyocytes, endothelial cells and macrophages.

Primary cilia are non-motile, microtubule-based sensory organelle present in most vertebrate cells with a fundamental role in the modulation of organismal development, morphogenesis, and repair. Here we focus on the role of primary cilia in embryonic and postnatal skeletal development. We examine evidence supporting its involvement in physiochemical and developmental signaling that regulates proliferation, patterning, differentiation and homeostasis of osteoblasts, chondrocytes, and their progenitor cells in the skeleton.

Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional multi-country pan-African qualitative survey case study on the perceived effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on healthcare workers in the continent focused specifically on personal safety and misinformation.
