Visualization is crucial to augment and enhance human understanding and decision-making in today's data-driven world. However, the way data are visualized can influence and drastically change the conclusions people draw using data. The findings around visualization effectiveness are nuanced, and guidelines for effective visualization design depend on the visual channels used, chart types, and analysis tasks.

Shape is commonly used to distinguish between categories in multi-class scatterplots. However, existing guidelines for choosing effective shape palettes rely largely on intuition and do not consider how these needs may change as the number of categories increases. Unlike color, shapes can not be represented by a numerical space, making it difficult to propose general guidelines or design heuristics for using shape effectively.

Annotations play a vital role in highlighting critical aspects of visualizations, aiding in data externalization and exploration, collaborative sensemaking, and visual storytelling. However, despite their widespread use, we identified a lack of a design space for common practices for annotations. In this paper, we evaluated over 1,800 static annotated charts to understand how people annotate visualizations in practice.

Background: It is still unclear the impact of diabetes mellitus (DM) in complex coronary lesions treated with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) which themselves are at increased incidence of adverse events.

Methods: BIFURCAT registry encompassed patients treated with PCI for coronary bifurcation lesion from the COBIS III and the RAIN registry. The primary endpoint was the occurrence of major cardiovascular adverse event (MACE), a composite and mutual exclusive of all-cause death or myocardial infarction (MI) or target-lesion revascularization (TLR).

Background: In patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) with multivessel coronary artery disease, the time at which complete revascularization of nonculprit lesions should be performed remains unknown.

Methods: We performed an international, open-label, randomized, noninferiority trial at 37 sites in Europe. Patients in a hemodynamically stable condition who had STEMI and multivessel coronary artery disease were randomly assigned to undergo immediate multivessel percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI; immediate group) or PCI of the culprit lesion followed by staged multivessel PCI of nonculprit lesions within 19 to 45 days after the index procedure (staged group).

Background: In patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) of the culprit lesion significantly reduces the risk of cardiovascular death. However, the management of non-culprit lesions in patients with the multivessel disease remains a matter of debate in this setting. It's still unclear if a morphological OCT-guided approach, identifying coronary plaque instability, may provide a more specific treatment compared with a standard angiographic/functional approach.

Article Synopsis
  • The study assessed in-hospital outcomes for nonagenarians (patients aged 90 and older) who underwent primary percutaneous coronary intervention (pPCI) for ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) between 2009-2019.
  • Out of 308 patients, 32% experienced in-hospital death, with identified predictors including lower left ventricle ejection fraction (LVEF), lower systolic blood pressure (SBP), and lack of independence in daily activities.
  • The findings suggest that nonagenarian STEMI patients have a high mortality rate after pPCI, and maintaining independence in daily life is crucial for improving their chances of survival during hospitalization.

  • Patients with a history of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) have a high risk of recurring cardiovascular issues, and recent therapies aim to lower these risks but may increase bleeding.
  • In a study of over 10,000 ACS patients, it was found that 53.4% qualified for the PEGASUS strategy, while 38.2% were eligible for the COMPASS strategy, with a notable overlap of 34.4% between the two.
  • Overall, about one-third of the patients could benefit from either prolonged dual antiplatelet therapy or dual pathway inhibition, indicating varying eligibility for these treatments among ACS patients.

  • Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome (WKS), often linked to chronic alcohol misuse, may be influenced by genetic variants that affect thiamine transport into cells.
  • Researchers analyzed exome sequencing data from a group of 29 individuals with WKS to identify genetic risk variants, leading to the discovery of 30 non-synonymous variants, with 23 being further tested in a larger cohort.
  • The study found a notable association between the SLC19A1 gene variant rs1051266:G and WKS, suggesting that this genetic variation may impair thiamine pyrophosphate transport, potentially contributing to the syndrome's development.

Pregnancy-related issues in women with multiple sclerosis (MS) have been receiving increasing attention, with particular interest for the use of disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) before conception, during pregnancy, and postpartum, including breastfeeding. The risk of relapse is higher in the early postpartum period, especially in cases of significant disease activity prior to pregnancy, and thus treatment resumption and/or switching strategies might be necessary. Moreover, breastfeeding provides unmatched health benefits for babies and mothers, and is recommended as the best source of nutrition for infants.
