Thermoelectric (TE) materials can convert the heat produced during biochemical reactions into electrical signals, enabling the self-powered detection of biomarkers. In this work, we design and fabricate a simple AgSe nanofilm-based TE biosensor to precisely quantify hydrogen peroxide (HO) levels in liquid samples. A chemical reaction involving horseradish peroxidase, ABTS and HO in the specimens produces a photothermal agent-ABTS (2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)) free radical, which triggers the heat fluctuations at the TE sensor through the photo-thermal effect, eventually enabling the sensing of HO.

The elderly face elevated mortality risk due to rising temperature. Previous assessments of temperature-related mortality, however, lack a comprehensive analysis of distinct impacts of temperature change across different timescales and characteristics. Using a longitudinal survey of 27,233 elderly Chinese citizens from 2005 to 2018, we establish connections between rising temperatures, temperature variability, and extreme heat with increased mortality risk, assessed through four annual metrics that combine temperature and humidity.

The photothermal sensitivity of tobacco refers to the degree to which tobacco responds to changes in light and temperature conditions in its growth environment, which is crucial for determining the planting area of cultivars and improving tobacco yield and quality. We study the energy cost of flocking in the active Ising model (AIM) and show that, besides the energy cost for self-propelled motion, an additional energy dissipation is required to power the alignment of spins. We find that this additional alignment dissipation reaches its maximum at the flocking transition point in the form of a cusp with a discontinuous first derivative with respect to the control parameter. To understand this singular behavior, we analytically solve the two- and three-site AIM models and obtain the exact dependence of the alignment dissipation on the flocking order parameter and control parameter, which explains the cusped dissipation maximum at the flocking transition.

Aphemia is a rare and special type of speech disorder, and the mechanisms underlying the occurrence and recovery remain unclear. Here, we present a clinical case of poor spontaneous recovery of aphemia, with the anterior segment of the left arcuate fasciculus server damaged and the posterior segment intact, as detected by diffusion tensor imaging. Aphemia could be caused by the disruption of the cortical and subcortical language circuits.
