Aim: To investigate whether trained immunity occurs in gingival fibroblasts (GFs) and its relationship to the persistence of inflammation in periodontitis.

Methods: Periodontally healthy and inflammatory gingival fibroblasts (HGFs and IGFs) were cultured through continuous adherence subculture of tissue blocks. Trained immunity in HGFs was evaluated via a classic in vitro model, with relevant markers assessed via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, lactate content assay, glycolytic rate assay, and chromatin immunoprecipitation.

Background: Our study investigated the role of experimental periodontitis on tumor growth, local and systemic immunosuppressive status, and programmed death receptor 1 (PD-1) / programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and prostate cancer.

Methods: Mouse oral or prostate cancer xenograft models were divided into control, periodontitis and periodontitis + anti-PD-1 groups. Tumor volume and weight were recorded and the levels of relevant immune-suppressive cells and T cells were detected by flow cytometry or immunofluorescence.

Rhodococcus qingshengii strain FF is a soil ubiquitous strain that has a high polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) biodegradation capability. In this work, phenanthrene was used as a PAH model compound. The accumulated pattern of the metabolites of phenanthrene by strain FF was investigated, and their toxicity to Vibrio fischeri, effect on microbiota diversity of farmland soil and influence on seed of wheat were evaluated.

Understanding the reasons for the differences in the spread of COVID-19 in different cities of China is important for future epidemic prevention and control. This study analyzed this issue from the perspective of population migration from Wuhan (the epicenter of the COVID-19 outbreak in China). It reveals that population outflow from Wuhan to other cities in Hubei Province (the province where Wuhan is located) and metropolises and provincial capitals outside of Hubei province exceeded those to other cities.

A rapid method for readily detecting the total numbers of viable bacterial cells in numerous samples (including surface water, solid inoculants, and soil samples) is reported using a newly developed hand-held fluorometer and a fluorescent dye Calcein UltraGreen™ AM. Compared to the traditional plate counting method that requires 48 hours of cultivation, the newly established method does not require any incubation time, making the detection method faster and more convenient. The portable rapid detection fluorometer has a wide dynamic range of relative fluorescence intensity from 45 to 30 133.
