Interleukin-2 (IL-2) is a T cell growth factor that is essential for the proliferation of T cells and the generation of effector and memory cells. The antitumor activity of high-dose IL-2 therapy requires maintaining the affinity between IL-2 and IL2-Rα, which can also bring serious toxic side effects. To address this issue, we designed ZGP-Cysteamine-IL-2-K64C and (ZGP-Cysteamine)-IL-2-(K43C, K64C) based on the strategy of FAPα enzyme-activated prodrugs, and investigated their anti-tumour activity and side effects.

Photothermal superhydrophobic surfaces present a promising energy-saving solution for anti-/de-icing, offering effective icing delay and photothermal de-icing capabilities. However, a significant challenge in their practical application is the mechanical interlocking of micro-nanostructures with ice formed from condensed water vapor, leading to meltwater retention and compromised functionality post-de-icing. Here, a robust photo-/electrothermal icephobic surface with dynamic phase-transition micro-nanostructures are demonstrated through laser microfabrication and surface engineering.

Background: Pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) exacerbation can lead to respiratory failure, multi-organ failure, and symptoms related to central nervous system diseases. The purpose of this study is to screen biomarkers and metabolic pathways that can predict the progression of PTB, and to verify the role of the metabolic enzyme xanthine oxidase (XO) in the progression of PTB.

Methods: To explore the biomarkers and mechanisms underlying the progression of PTB, plasma metabolomics sequencing was conducted on patients with severe PTB, non-severe PTB, and healthy individuals.

This study synthesized a robust, magnetically responsive hydrogel from Sophora flavescens-modified cellulose and chitosan, employing Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA and DTG), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to confirm the preservation of cellulose's intrinsic properties and the hydrogel's remarkable elasticity, toughness, and porosity. These hydrogels integrate cellulose's structural backbone with functional moieties from chitosan, enhancing adsorption capabilities for Cu ions and Congo red (CR) dye. Kinetic and thermodynamic analyses reveal that adsorption is spontaneous and endothermic, following a pseudo-second-order model and the Freundlich isotherm.

Article Synopsis
  • Lipids are essential for growth and reproduction, and urine-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) are being studied as potential biomarkers for tuberculosis (TB) due to their non-invasive nature and lipid content.
  • Researchers isolated urine-derived EVs from 41 participants (including healthy individuals and those with TB) to analyze their lipid profiles and identify biomarkers using advanced statistical methods.
  • The study found 226 lipids, identifying 7 potential lipid biomarkers for TB and 6 for latent TB, with one promising biomarker, free fatty acid (FFA 20:1), showing high diagnostic performance in distinguishing TB from latent TB infection.

Objective: Acute lung injury (ALI) has become a research hotspot due to its significant public health impact. To explore the value of the use of modified lung ultrasound (MLUS) scoring system for evaluating ALI using a rabbit model of ALI induced by hydrochloric acid (HCl) and investigate its correlation with high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) and histopathological scores.

Methods: Twenty New Zealand laboratory rabbits were randomly assigned to control group (N = 5) and 3 experimental groups (N = 5 each).

Objective: To assess fear of progression (FoP)'s relationship with symptom burden and disease and social/family factors, as well as, determine the status of FoP in women with stage-IV breast cancer in Shandong, China.

Methods: Two hundred and sixteen women were recruited from the department of breast cancer internal medicine, Shandong Cancer Hospital and Institute. Data for this observational study were collected between October 2020 and January 2021 using the MD Anderson Symptom Inventory, the Fear of Progression Questionnaire-Short Form (FoP-Q-SF) and a participant information scale.

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) is a significant public health concern, particularly in China. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) can provide abundant pathological information regarding etiology and could include candidate biomarkers for diagnosis of TB. However, data regarding lncRNA expression profiles and specific lncRNAs associated with TB are limited.

The circadian clock exists in almost all life forms, and is an internal activity generated by organisms adapting to the daily periodic changes of the external environment. The circadian clock is regulated by the transcription-translation-negative feedback loop in the body, which can regulate the activities of tissues and organs. Its normal maintenance is important for the health, growth, and reproduction of organisms.

Tuberculosis (TB), caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infection, is currently the deadliest infectious disease in human that can evolve to severe forms. A comprehensive immune landscape for Mtb infection is critical for achieving TB cure, especially for severe TB patients. We performed single-cell RNA transcriptome and T-cell/B-cell receptor (TCR/BCR) sequencing of 213,358 cells from 27 samples, including 6 healthy donors and 21 active TB patients with varying severity (6 mild, 6 moderate and 9 severe cases).

Pituitary pars tuberalis (PT) plays an important role as the transmission center in the seasonal reproduction of animals. It helps convert external photoperiod signals into intrinsic seasonal reproduction signals. In sheep PT, specific expression patterns of several genes (including short photoperiod-induced gene and long photoperiod genes and ) under different photoperiods are crucial characteristics during this signal transduction.

The spectrum and size controllable synthesis of gold nanorods is of great value for their widely applicable aspect ratio dependence of anisotropic surface plasmon resonance. Herein, 1,7-dihydroxynaphthalene with a relatively strong reducibility is proposed as a reducing agent for the controllable synthesis of gold nanorods. The result indicated that gold nanorods with high monodispersity, high shape yield, relatively small diameters, and maximum plasmon resonance wavelength of above 1000 nm can be acquired.

  • Diabetes is a condition that leads to high blood sugar due to issues with insulin production or function, and traditional insulin injections can be uncomfortable and cause infections.
  • Researchers have developed a new mini-tablet system using self-propelled micromotors that is safe for the body and breaks down naturally for oral delivery of insulin directly to the colon.
  • These mini-tablets not only enable controlled release of insulin through local degradation but also enhance its absorption in the body, providing an effective way to manage blood sugar levels for over five hours.
