Background: Patients with high-grade serous ovarian carcinoma (HGSOC) often have a personal and/or family history of breast cancers. However, the clinical association and underlying molecular interaction between breast cancer and HGSOC is not well understood. In this study, the clinical characteristics and outcomes of HGSOC patients with or without breast cancer were compared.

CpG oligodeoxynucleotides (CpG), as an immunoadjuvant, can facilitate the transformation of tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs)into tumoricidal M1 macrophages. However, the accumulation of free CpG in tumor tissues remains a substantial challenge. To address this, a nanovaccine (PLGA-CpG@ID8-M) is engineered by encapsulating CpG within PLGA using ID8 ovarian cancer cell membranes (ID8-M).

Article Synopsis
  • Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) frequently leads to brain metastases, impacting patient health, prompting exploration of treatment options.
  • A study with 161 NSCLC patients tested the effects of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) with brain radiotherapy versus chemotherapy with brain radiotherapy, measuring overall survival and other outcomes.
  • Results showed that patients receiving ICIs plus brain radiotherapy had a significantly longer overall survival (34.80 months) compared to those on chemotherapy (17.17 months), indicating that ICIs may be a better treatment option for this group.

Lymph node metastasis (LNM) is often regarded as an indicator of poor prognosis in various cancers. Despite over three centuries of exploration since its discovery, the molecular mechanisms underlying LNM remain inconclusive. This review summarizes the molecular mechanisms of LNM, using the "PUMP+" principle for clarification.

Article Synopsis
  • Immunotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is effective but has low response rates; the role of PD-L1 on small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) in tumor immunosuppression is a key focus of research.
  • The study investigates how the Epstein-Barr virus protein LMP1 influences tumor immunity in NPC by analyzing T cell presence and sEV characteristics in both human tissues and mouse models.
  • Results show that high LMP1 levels limit CD8 T cell infiltration and promote PD-L1 secretion through interactions with ALIX, suggesting a potential pathway for therapeutic intervention to enhance immune responses in NPC.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a severe clinical disease usually accompanied by activated glial scar, neuronal axon rupture, and disabled motor function. To mimic the microenvironment of the SCI injury site, a hydrogel system with a comparable mechanical property to the spinal cord is desirable. Therefore, a novel elastic bovine serum albumin (BSA) hydrogel is fabricated with excellent adhesive, injectable, and biocompatible properties.

Background: Immunotherapy provides a remarkable survival advantage for patients with recurrent or metastatic cervical cancer (R/M CC). However, the role of immunotherapy in combination with radiotherapy in R/M CC remains unclear.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed factors affecting immunotherapy effectiveness in patients with R/M CC.

Background: The HIMALAYA trial found that durvalumab plus tremelimumab significantly prolonged progression-free survival and overall survival in patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) compared with sorafenib.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the cost-effectiveness of durvalumab plus tremelimumab compared with sorafenib in the first-line HCC setting.

Design: A Markov model-based cost-effectiveness analysis.

Background And Aims: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the leading causes of cancer-related death all over the world, and brings a heavy social economic burden especially in China. Several immuno-combination therapies have shown promising efficacy in the first-line treatment of unresectable HCC and are widely used in clinical practice. Nevertheless, which combination is the most affordable one is unknown.

Article Synopsis
  • Neck dissection is a common treatment for oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), but it can lead to complications that affect patient quality of life and immune response.
  • This study analyzed literature on lymph node metastasis (LNM) in OSCC, identifying 17 relevant studies and calculating LNM frequencies across different neck levels.
  • The findings suggest low LNM frequencies at certain levels and indicate that more conservative treatment approaches could be beneficial, helping doctors optimize surgical decisions while preserving lymph nodes.

The formation of protein corona (PC) is important for promoting the in vivo delivery of nanoparticles (NPs). However, PC formed in the physiological environment of oral delivery is poorly understood. Here, we engineered seven types of trimethyl chitosan-cysteine (TC) NPs, with distinct molecular weights, quaternization degrees, and thiolation degrees, to deeply investigate the influence of various PC formed in the physiological environment of oral delivery on in vivo gene delivery of polymeric NPs, further constructing the relationship between the surface characteristics of NPs and the efficacy of oral gene delivery.

Background: The effect of whole-brain radiation therapy (WBRT) plus simultaneous integrated boost (SIB) in brain metastasis from breast cancers has not been demonstrated.

Method: In this single-center retrospective study, we reviewed consecutive breast cancer patients who developed brain metastasis and were treated with hypofractionated radiation therapy plus WBRT using intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT)-SIB approaches. We analyzed clinical outcomes, prognostic factors and patterns of treatment failure.

Background: Growing evidence has shown that atopic dermatitis (AD) may decrease lung cancer (LC) risk. However, the causality between the two diseases is inconsistent and controversial. Therefore, we explored the causal relationship between AD and different histological subtypes of LC by using the Mendelian randomization (MR) method.

  • mRNA vaccines show high effectiveness against COVID-19 and potential for treating various cancers, but the understanding of key components like adjuvants is still limited.
  • The development of adjuvants is in early stages, and current adjuvant platforms and drug delivery systems (DDS) may need a new definition due to their novel immunostimulatory properties.
  • The review highlights challenges in using cancer mRNA vaccine adjuvants, including immune-related side effects and effectiveness in older adults, and suggests strategies to enhance their design and application.

It is unclear how telomere-binding protein TPP1 interacts with human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) and influences cervical cancer development and progression. This study included all eligible 156 cervical cancers diagnosed during 2003-2008 and followed up through 2014, 102 cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) patients, and 16 participants with normal cervix identified at the same period. Correlation of expression of TPP1 and hTERT in these lesions was assessed using Kappa statistics.

Lymph node metastasis (LNM) significantly impacts the prognosis of cancer patients. Despite significant advancements in diagnostic techniques and treatment modalities, clinical challenges continue to persist in the realm of LNM. These include difficulties in early diagnosis, limited treatment efficacy, and potential side effects and injuries associated with treatment.

Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) are a group of heterogenous immature myeloid cells with potent immune suppressive properties that not only constrain anti-tumor immune activation and functions, promote tumor progression, but also contribute to treatment resistance and tumor relapse. Targeting MDSCs may be a promising new cancer treatment method, but there is still a problem of low treatment efficiency. Combined application with radiotherapy may be a potential method to solve this problem.

Head and neck soft-tissue sarcomas are rare but aggressive malignancies. Definitive radiotherapy might be an alternative treatment choice in patients unfit for surgery with preservation of organ function and facial morphology. Whether definitive radiotherapy is comparable with surgery has not been fully demonstrated.
