Introduction: Laboratory animals are widely used in biomedical research. Surveillance of naturally occurring virus in laboratory animals is important to fully understand the results of animal experiment, control laboratory-acquired infections among research personnel and manage viral transmission within laboratory animal populations. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of multiple RNA viruses in laboratory animals commonly used in China.

Chronic hepatitis E mostly occurs in organ transplant recipients and can lead to rapid liver fibrosis and cirrhosis. Previous studies found that the development of chronic hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection is linked to the type of immunosuppressant used. Animal models are crucial for the study of pathogenesis of chronic hepatitis E.

Article Synopsis
  • Hepatitis E virus (HEV-1) causes millions of infections and deaths annually, and researchers are exploring whether Mongolian gerbils can serve as animal models for studying HEV-1.
  • By adapting a clinical strain of HEV-1 through serial passaging in gerbils, the study successfully induced acute infections that were characterized by virus shedding and liver damage.
  • This gerbil model will provide valuable insights into HEV immunopathogenesis and help evaluate potential vaccines and antiviral treatments for hepatitis E.

The presence of sub-minimal inhibitory concentration (sub-MIC) antibiotics in our environment is widespread, and their ability to induce antibiotic resistance is inevitable. , a pathogen known for its strong ability to acquire antibiotic resistance, has recently shown clinical resistance to the last-line antibiotic tigecycline. To unravel the complex mechanism of drug resistance, we subjected tigecycline-susceptible, -intermediate, and -mildly-resistant strains to successive increases in sub-MIC tigecycline and ultimately obtained tigecycline-resistant strains.

is one of the main pathogens causing nosocomial and community-acquired infections. Tigecycline is an important antibiotic for the treatment of multidrug-resistant infections, but strains resistant to tigecycline have also emerged. There are still many unclear questions concerning the mechanism of tigecycline resistance in .

is one of the most important food-borne pathogens, whose motility and virulence are highly related to flagella. Flagella alternatively express two kinds of surface antigen flagellin, FliC and FljB, in a phenomenon known as flagellar phase variation. The molecular mechanisms by which the switching orientation of the Hin-composed DNA segment mediates the expression of the promoter have been thoroughly illustrated.

Posttranscriptional control of gene expression can be achieved through RNA interference when the activities of Dicer-like (DCL), argonaute (AGO) and RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RDR) proteins are significant. In this study, we analysed the expression of seven AGO, five DCL and eight RDR genes in cucumber under cold, heat, hormone, salinity and dehydration treatments using quantitative reverse-transcription PCR (qRT-PCR). All CsAGO, CsDCL and CsRDR genes were differentially expressed under abiotic stress treatment.

Background: Current guidelines recommend full axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) whenever the SLN is positive for metastases. In our institute, we aim to complete surgery in a single setting and base the decision for ALND on the intraoperative FS analysis of the SLN. In this study, we evaluate the efficacy this practice in terms of the accuracy of FS analysis, patient recall rate, and additional time required for FS analysis.

Background: The need for surgical excision of benign papillary lesions diagnosed on core biopsy remains debatable. This lack of consensus arises because although there is a possibility of histological underestimation, there are as yet no reliable predictors of malignancy. We therefore aimed to evaluate the incidence of histological underestimation in our practice, and to identify factors that predict for this, in order to reduce unnecessary surgery without missing out on possible malignancy.
