Background: Septic arthritis (SA) of the hip joint is a serious infection that can result in irreversible complications. Distinguishing septic arthritis from transient synovitis, the most common cause of hip pain in children, is crucial for preventing severe outcomes. Existing research has primarily focused on identifying clinical signs and laboratory findings that indicate high-risk patients who may need invasive diagnostic procedures; however, results have been inconsistent.

Article Synopsis
  • The hyperpronation (HP) maneuver shows superior success rates in reducing radial head subluxation after failed initial treatments compared to the traditional supination-flexion (SF) maneuver, although the best treatment approach is still debated.
  • A comprehensive review analyzed nine studies with 170 patients, confirming that HP has a significantly higher success rate for second attempts at reducing the subluxation.
  • Despite the advantages of HP, the effectiveness of crossover maneuvers for second reductions was not significantly different, suggesting that treatment decisions should be based on the clarity of the initial reduction method used.

Background: Trigger thumb is a prevalent hand condition observed in children, and its management remains a topic of considerable debate, ranging from mere observation to surgical intervention. In recent times, there has been a growing interest in exploring nonoperative treatments as alternatives to surgical procedures for managing pediatric trigger thumb. Gaining insight into the prevalence of spontaneous resolution in pediatric trigger thumb is of paramount importance.

Objective: The 85th percentile of waist circumference (WC) is considered an appropriate cutoff for Chinese children in the prediction of cardiovascular risks in previous researches, but the risk for hypertension of moderate WC maybe underestimated. The purpose of this study was to understand the characteristics of the WC curve trajectory of children with hypertension and to determine the appropriate cutoffs for waist circumference for Chinese school-age children and adolescents for predicting hypertension risk factors.

Methods: A total of 8194 Han children aged 7 - 17 years were selected from schools in Suzhou, Hefei, and Chizhou cities in Anhui province by stratified cluster sampling.

Recent studies demonstrate that activation of Ca(2+)-permeable N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors upregulates phosphorylation of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) in heterologous cells and neurons. In cultured rat striatal neurons, the present work systematically evaluated the role of a number of protein kinases in forming a signaling cascade transducing NMDA receptor signals to MAPKs. It was found that a brief NMDA application consistently induced rapid and transient phosphorylation of the extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2), a best characterized subclass of MAPKs.
