Background: Thrombomodulin, a thrombin receptor with anticoagulant, anti-inflammatory, and cytoprotective properties, has been suggested to play a pivotal role in ischemic stroke. However, the association of plasma thrombomodulin with post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) remains unclear. We aimed to prospectively investigate the associations of plasma thrombomodulin with PSCI among ischemic stroke patients in a multicenter cohort study.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of the deacetylated konjac glucomannan (DKGM), with varying degree of deacetylation (DD), on the physicochemical and structural properties of transglutaminase-induced soy protein isolate (SPI) cold-set gels. Compared with native konjac glucomannan (KGM), DKGM significantly enhanced the gel strength, water-holding capacity, and thermal stability of the composite gels, with DK3 (DKGM with 65.85 % deacetylation) showing the most significant improvement.

Background: Soy protein isolate (SPI) gels formed using a single coagulant often have poor water-holding capacity (WHC) and low hardness, making them fragile and unsuitable for transportation and storage. Adding compound coagulants or polysaccharides can improve the gelation properties of SPI gels induced by gluconolactone (GDL). This study explores the impact of oxidized konjac glucomannan (OKGM) on the physicochemical and structural properties of GDL-induced SPI gels, with the aim of evaluating the potential of OKGM for enhancing the overall quality and stability of these gels.

This study aimed to develop rice protein/sodium alginate (RP/SA) pH-responsive films with enhanced properties by incorporating dialdehyde starch (DAS) and Lycium ruthenicum anthocyanins (LRA) and the film was applied to monitor the fruit freshness. The effect of the DAS and LRA content on the morphology, mechanical, water barrier, oxygen barrier, ultraviolet-blocking and thermal stability properties of RP/SA-based films was investigated. The best water vapor permeability of the film was 3.

Article Synopsis
  • - Preeclampsia (PE) is a common pregnancy complication linked to abnormal placental development, with mechanisms behind it still not fully understood.
  • - The study focused on DOCK1, a key molecule in cell processes, finding that reduced DOCK1 expression in placental cells leads to impaired vascular network formation, increased inflammation, and ultimately contributes to the progression of PE.
  • - Results indicated that deficiencies in DOCK1 can cause serious placental dysfunction, suggesting that targeting DOCK1 could be a potential treatment avenue for managing PE in future research.

Spontaneous abortion (SA) is a devastating, but common outcome for expectant parents and their families. However, the mechanism of SA occurrence remains mostly unknown. Herein, we examined human SA villi samples and found decreased N6-methyladenosine (m6A) levels and methyltransferase-like protein 14 (METTL14) expression compared with those in healthy women.

Ischemic stroke caused by cerebrovascular embolism is an age-related disease with high rates of disability and mortality. Although the mechanisms of immune and inflammatory development after stroke have been of great interest, most studies have neglected the critical and unavoidable factor of age. As the global aging trend intensifies, the number of stroke patients is constantly increasing, emphasizing the urgency of finding effective measures to address the needs of elderly stroke patients.

  • The Yellow River Delta significantly influenced the Neolithic civilization in China, but its population history remains unclear due to limited ancient genome data.
  • This study presents genome-wide data from 69 ancient individuals and 325 modern individuals in Shandong, revealing a notable influx of ancestry from central and southern China during key Neolithic periods.
  • Genetic analysis indicates that the Longshan culture is closely related to the Dawenkou culture, with post-Neolithic migrations shaping the region's genetic diversity and modern populations.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers are addressing the challenge of making hydrophilic protein/polysaccharide films less sensitive to moisture using fatty acid dispersed in Pickering emulsion.
  • Increasing the fatty acid chain length slightly lowers water vapor permeability (WVP), while the introduction of double bonds significantly reduces WVP by 14.02% and improves mechanical properties.
  • Coating bananas with oleic acid-emulsion film results in 6.81% less weight loss over 4 days compared to uncoated bananas, demonstrating its effectiveness in delaying oil oxidation, making it a promising food packaging alternative.

The ideal physicochemical properties of bigels are important for food applications. Therefore, a new bigel was prepared based on mixed beef tallow and soybean oil oleogel and deacetylated konjac glucomannan (KGM) hydrogel. The effect of the deacetylation degree of KGM on the physicochemical properties and microstructure of bigels was studied.

The properties and structure of gluten protein with different deacetylation degrees of konjac glucomannan (KGM) were investigated, in an attempt to improve the quality of gluten protein in flour products. Results showed that deacetylated KGM (DKGM) could improve the textural properties and enhance the thermal stability of gluten protein. DKGM increased the water holding capacity and shortened the T relaxation time of gluten after removing some acetyl groups.

Aromatic system extension of corannulene (Cor) is a synthetic challenge to access non-planar polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Herein, we report the design and synthesis of azaborahelicene corannulene 1 through hybridization of an azabora[5] helical structure and subsequent luminescence studies. Significant enhancement in chemiluminescence (CL), electroluminescence (ECL) and photoluminescence (PL) is achieved compared to those of pristine Cor.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Ischemic stroke is a serious disabling and fatal disease that places a heavy burden on the world. Stroke induces a state of systemic immunosuppression that is strongly associated with an increased risk of infection and severe outcomes. Buyang Huanwu Decoction (BYHWD) is an ancient Chinese traditional formula with a good clinical and experimental basis.
