To simultaneously enhance the osteogenic and antibacterial properties of titanium, we introduced magnesium (Mg), silver (Ag), or both by using the plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII) technique, producing three PIII sample groups, namely, Mg-doped titanium (Mg-PIII), Ag-doped titanium (Ag-PIII), and Mg and Ag codoped titanium (Mg/Ag-PIII). The in vitro antibacterial efficacy of Mg/Ag-PIII group was about 7-10% higher than that of Ag-PIII. In vitro and in vivo results demonstrated that osteogenic property of Mg/Ag PIII group was better than that of Ag-PIII or Mg-PIII.

In this study, multifunctional polyethersulfone (PES) membranes are prepared via in situ cross-linked copolymerization coupled with a liquid-liquid phase separation technique. Acrylic acid (AA) and N-vinylpyrrolidone (VP) are copolymerized in PES solution, and the solution is then directly used to prepare PES membranes. The infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy testing, scanning electron microscopy, and water contact angle measurements confirm the successful modification of pristine PES membrane.

Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) are heterogeneous, immature, myeloid progenitor cells, which suppress immune responses against tumors. CD14(+)HLA-DR(-/low) monocytic MDSCs (M-MDSC) are increased in patients suffering from multiple myeloma (MM). However, the frequency and function of M-MDSCs with the relationship between the tumor development and outcome of therapy in MM remain unclear.

Using the whole genome sequencing data and the simulated longitudinal phenotypes for 849 pedigree-based individuals from Genetic Analysis Workshop 18, we investigated various approaches to detecting the association of rare and common variants with blood pressure traits. We compared three strategies for longitudinal data: (a) using the baseline measurement only, (b) using the average from multiple visits, and (c) using all individual measurements. We also compared the power of using all of the pedigree-based data and the unrelated subset.

In this study, we provide a new method to modify poly(ether sulfone) (PES) membrane with good biocompatibility, for which diazotized PES (PES-N2(+)) membrane is covalently coated by a negatively charged copolymer of sodium sulfonated poly(styrene-alt-maleic anhydride) (NaSPS-MA). First, aminated PES (PES-NH2) is synthesized by nitro reduction reaction of nitro-PES (PES-NO2), and then blends with pristine PES to prepare PES/PES-NH2 membrane; then the membrane is treated with NaNO2 aqueous solution at acid condition; after surface diazo reaction, surface positively charged PES/PES-N2(+) membrane is prepared. Second, poly(styrene-alt-maleic anhydride) (PS-alt-MA) is synthesized, then sulfonated and treated by sodium hydroxide solution to obtain sodium sulfonated (PS-alt-MA) (NaSPS-MA).

Research on the interactions between living systems and materials is fuelled by diverse biomedical needs, for example, drug encapsulation and stimulated release, stem cell proliferation and differentiation, cell and tissue cultures, as well as artificial organs. Specific single-molecular-layer biointerface design is one of the most important processes to reveal the interactions or biological responses between synthetic biomaterials and living systems. However, until now, there is limited literature on comprehensively revealing biomaterials induced blood component activation and hemocompatibility based on the single-molecular-layer interface approach.
