Article Synopsis
  • Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) evade destruction by natural killer (NK) cells in the immune system, aided by their tumor microenvironment (TME) and supportive mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs).* -
  • This study reveals that MSCs enhance NK resistance in cancer cells through a specific signaling mechanism involving gap junctions and an intercellular communication pathway (cGAS-cGAMP-STING), leading to increased interferon-β production.* -
  • The increased interferon-β boosts HLA-I expression on tumor cells, protecting them from NK cell attacks; interrupting this signaling loop could make tumor cells more vulnerable and reduce metastasis.*

Multimorbidity is an increasingly significant public health challenge worldwide. Although the association between environmental factors and the morbidity and mortality of individual chronic diseases is well-established, the relationship between environmental inequalities and multimorbidity, as well as the patterns of multimorbidity across different areas and ethnic groups, remains unclear. We first focus on analyzing the differences in environmental exposures and patterns of multimorbidity across diverse areas and ethnic groups.

Risk assessment of arsenic-induced skin damage has always received significant global attention. Theories derived from arsenic exposure in drinking water may not be applicable to the coal-burning type to arsenic-exposed area. Furthermore, very few studies have successfully determined the reference value of cumulative arsenic (CA) exposure that leads to specific skin lesions.

Arsenic exposure is a major environmental public health challenge worldwide. As typical manifestations for arsenic exposure, the pathogenesis of arsenic-induced skin lesions has not been fully elucidated, as well as the lack of effective control measures. In this study, we first determined the short-term and high-dose arsenic exposure can increase the apoptosis rates, while long-term low-dose arsenic exposure decrease the apoptosis rates.

Ferroptosis is a unique form of programmed cell death driven by iron-dependent phospholipid peroxidation that was proposed in recent years. It plays an important role in processes of various trace element-related diseases and is regulated by redox homeostasis and various cellular metabolic pathways (iron, amino acids, lipids, sugars), as well as disease-related signaling pathways. Some limited pioneering studies have demonstrated ferroptosis as a mechanism for the health effects of essential trace elements and potentially toxic trace elements, with crosstalk among them.

Previous studies assessing adverse health have traditionally focused on a single environmental exposure, failing to reflect the reality of various exposures present simultaneously. Air pollution, ambient temperature and greenness have been proposed as critical environmental factors associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS). However, evidence exploring their joint relationships with MetS is needed for identifying interactive factors and developing more targeted public health interventions.
