TiO(2) printed aluminum foil: single-use film for a laser desorption/ionization target plate.

Single-use aluminum foil-based laser desorption/ionization (LDI) target plates have been developed for mass spectrometry (MS) analysis and provide detection results comparable to those of commercial stainless steel plates while offering a convenient way to avoid the time-consuming surface cleaning process. Additionally, arrays of TiO(2) nanoparticle spots are coated on the foil either by screen-printing or rotogravure-printing followed by sintering to form a mesoporous layer spot to act as an anchor for sample deposition. These TiO(2) spots offer further functions to the Al foil, such as matrix-free laser desorption/ionization or specific affinity for in situ enrichment of phosphopeptides.

[Protective effect of lytic cocktail (inhibition of stress) on lung injury in severe burn rat].

Objective: To investigate the protective effect of inhibition of stress (lytic cocktail) on lung injury in severe burn rats at early stage.

Methods: Sprague-Dawley rats inflicted with 30% TBSA full-thickness burn were randomly divided into A group (n = 36, fluid resuscitation with administration of lytic cocktail), B group (n = 36, fluid resuscitation only). Lung function was evaluated by partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2) in arterial blood and histopathologic changes on 3, 5, 7, 10 post burn day (PBD).

Background: Acute lung injury (ALI) is a frequent but poorly understood complication of traumatic brain injury (TBI). The Nrf2-ARE pathway has been proved to be essential for protection against diffuse inflammation and oxidative damage, which are both involved in ALI following TBI. However, whether the Nrf2-ARE pathway is activated after TBI in the lung hasn't been studied.

Oncogene functions of FHL2 are independent from NF-kappaBIalpha in gastrointestinal cancer.

Four and a half of LIM-only protein 2 (FHL2) is an adaptor protein that can interact with many transcription factors and thus plays a variety of biological functions. Previous studies by our group have demonstrated that suppression of FHL2 was capable of inducing tumor cell differentiation, and inhibiting the growth of experimental gastric and colon cancers. Therefore, FHL2 appears to function as an oncogene.

Gene expression profile in colon cancer cells with respect to XIAP expression status.

Background And Aims: We observed a marked synergism between peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARgamma) ligands and X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis (XIAP) down-regulation in colon cancer. In the current study, we detected the gene expression profile in HCT116 cells treated with or without PPARgamma ligand troglitazone.

Materials And Methods: HCT116-XIAP(+/+) and HCT116-XIAP(-/-) cells were treated with or without 50 microM troglitazone for 48 h.

Down-regulation of X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis synergistically enhanced peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma ligand-induced growth inhibition in colon cancer.

We found previously that X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis protein (XIAP), a potent endogenous inhibitor of apoptosis, is overexpressed in colon cancer. Ligand-induced activation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARgamma) has been shown to exert proapoptotic and antiproliferative effects in many cancer cell types. However, neither XIAP down-regulation alone nor monotherapy using PPARgamma ligands is potent enough to control colon cancer.

[Association between indoor coal-burning pollutants associated with asthmatic susceptible genetic polymorphisms in childhood asthma].

Objective: To determine the level of exposure to indoor pollutants (PM4, SO2, CO) produced by burning coal in home of asthmatic children in Guiding County, Guizhou Province, and to observe the distribution frequencies of ACE gene and the 16th and 27th loci of beta2 adrenergic receptor (beta2-AR) gene in the children, and to reveal the association between the pollutants and the susceptible genes in childhood asthma.

Methods: Case-only study, an epidemiologic method, was employed. PCR was used to examine the polymorphisms at the 16th and 27th loci of beta2-AR gene and the insertion/deletion (ID) polymorphisms of angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) gene in 231 children suffered from asthma.

Aim: Pancreatic duodenal homeobox-1 (PDX1) is a transcription factor of homeobox genes family important in differentiation and development of the pancreas, duodenum and antrum. This study aims to clarify the putative role of PDX1 in gastric carcinogenesis.

An on-plate specific enrichment method is presented for the direct analysis of peptides phosphorylation. An array of sintered TiO 2 nanoparticle spots was prepared on a stainless steel plate to provide porous substrate with a very large specific surface and durable functions. These spots were used to selectively capture phosphorylated peptides from peptide mixtures, and the immobilized phosphopeptides could then be analyzed directly by MALDI MS after washing away the nonphosphorylated peptides.
