Objective: To investigate the expression and activity of fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) in the colon and its role in children with slow transit constipation (STC).

Methods: Patients were divided into constipation group (n=21) and control group (n=15). The constipation group was consistent with the diagnostic criteria for STC.

A series of novel potent benzimidazole based inhibitors of interleukin-2 T-cell kinase (Itk) were prepared. In this report, we discuss the structure-activity relationship (SAR), selectivity, and cell-based activity for the series. We also discuss the SAR associated with an X-ray structure of one of the small-molecule inhibitors bound to ITK.

Previously, we reported a series of novel benzimidazole based Itk inhibitors that exhibited excellent enzymatic potency and selectivity but low microsomal stability. Employing a structure based approach a new series of inhibitors with comparable potency and selectivity to the original series and with a potential for improved microsome stability was identified.

Objective: To investigate the mean survival time and risk factors of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Methods: Sixty-five ALS patients were followed up, and the clinical data of 33 of them who died were retrospectively analyzed. The survival time and related risk factors were analysed with the statistic tools such as Kaplan-Meier survival curve, t test, and variance analysis.

Six compounds were isolated from Rhizoma Heterosmilacis Japonicae. They were identified as beta-sitosterol (I) dau-costerol (II),3,3',5,5'-tetrahydroxy-4'-methoxystilbene (III), naringenin (IV), alpha-L-butylsorbopyranoside (V) and macrozamin (VI). The compounds III, IV, V and VI were isolated from this genus for the first time.

A simple, rapid and sensitive LC-MS method was developed for quantification of deoxyschizandrin in rat plasma. A 50 miccrol plasma sample was extracted by ether and performed on Elite Hypersil C(18) column (200 mm x 4.6 mm, 5 microm) with the mobile phase of methanol-water (84:16, v/v) in a run time of 6.

Objective: To investigate the clinicopathological characteristics of advanced colorectal cancer which was 30 mm or smaller in diameter.

Methods: Retrospective analysis documented 80 patients with small advanced colorectal cancer from May 1985 to May 2002. According to the diameter of tumors, all patients were divided into three groups: Group A (10 mm or less), Group B (11-20 mm), Group C (21-30 mm).

Objective: To explore whether the inducible knockdown of endogenous CXCR4 gene expression in breast cancer cells can inhibit the migration significantly in vitro.

Methods: The hairpin siRNA templates were designed and the siRNA expression cassettes (SECs) were generated. In vitro the SECs were transfected into MDA-MB-231 cells using the agent siPORTTM XP-1.

Three types of mono- and disaccharides 3a,b, 4a-c, 5, and some chaetomellic acid A analogs 6 and 42-44 were synthesized as potential inhibitors of the transglycosylase activity of penicillin-binding protein 1b (PBP1b), a key bacterial enzyme responsible for the formation of the polysaccharide backbone of peptidoglycan as well as for cross-linking of its peptide portions. The target compounds combine structural features of both the active portion of moenomycin and the natural PBP1b substrate, lipid II. The desired skeletons were obtained in a convergent fashion involving attachment of the lipid-alkylated glyceric acid moieties 11a,b to the corresponding carbohydrate-containing phosphonic acids 23, 24a, and 24b.

[reaction: see text] Galactose oxidase produced a C-6 aldehyde in various terminal-containing galactose hydroxylamines for the simultaneous in situ generation of an A-B type condensation for the construction of unique oxime polymers. Molecular weights of the corresponding polymers were determined to be in the range of 4200-8900 g/mol, respectively. This indicates that approximately 20-25 sugar units were incorporated in these unique polymers.
