Arsenic (As) and heavy metal contamination in aquatic systems pose critical environmental challenges, particularly in reservoirs. This study utilized dual-sided high-resolution diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) probes on-site to investigate the spatial distribution and mobility of As species and heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Sb, and Zn) in the Hongfeng Reservoir, a deep karst reservoir in southwest China. Results revealed that As mobility was primarily governed by redox-sensitive processes, including the reduction of As(V) to As(III) and the reductive dissolution of Fe/Mn oxides.

Eutrophication triggered by internal phosphorus (P) poses a substantial threat to the biodiversity of organisms in freshwater ecosystems. However, little is known about the linkages between P resource partitioning and microbial succession, especially in karst sediments. Here, we studied the diversity patterns and assembly processes of bacterial and archaeal communities in sediment cores from two historically hyper-eutrophicated karst lakes, Hongfeng Lake and Aha Lake, and investigated the relative contribution of P fractions to them.

Chemo-photodynamic synergistic therapy (CPST) holds tremendous promise for treating cancers. Unfortunately, existing CPST applications suffer from complex synthetic procedures, low drug co-loading efficiency, and carrier-related toxicity. To address these issues, we have developed a supramolecular carrier-free self-sensitized nanoassemblies by co-assembling podophyllotoxin (PTOX) and chlorin e6 (Ce6) to enhance CPST efficiency against tumors.

Article Synopsis
  • Chemoresistance is a significant factor in treatment failure for nasopharyngeal carcinoma, primarily linked to high levels of the E3 ubiquitin ligase PJA1, which is associated with poor response to chemotherapy.
  • PJA1 contributes to resistance by preventing pyroptosis through the degradation of the mitochondrial protein PGAM5, which reduces reactive oxygen species production and hampers the immune response against tumors.
  • Targeting PJA1 with inhibitors like RTA402 shows potential to enhance chemotherapy effectiveness, suggesting that E3 ligases are crucial in managing chemoresistance and can be explored for new treatment strategies.

The microbiota of solid tumors was identified >100 years ago; however, heterogeneous composition and diversity have been revealed only recently. Growing evidence has suggested that several functional mechanisms of the intratumoral microbiota affect tumorigenesis and progression, suggesting that the intratumoral microbiota is a promising biomarker for multiple cancers. The low biomass of the intratumoral microbiota poses a major challenge to related research, thus necessitating the use of a multiple-modality integrated framework to resolve this dilemma.
