GJ Express: an improvement initiative to decrease sedation and anesthesia for gastrojejunostomy tube exchanges.

Background: Overuse of sedation and anesthesia causes delays in gastrojejunostomy tube (GJ) exchanges, increased risk of complications, unnecessary use of resources, preventable hospital admissions, and an adverse impact on patient and family experience. Our hospital was over-utilizing sedation and anesthesia, and we aimed to decrease this use from 78% to 20% within two years.

Methods: An interdisciplinary quality improvement team comprehensively evaluated current processes for GJ tube exchanges through a retrospective chart review for baseline data with prospective time series analysis after improvement implementation.

Progression from preplus to plus disease in the Telemedicine Approaches to Evaluating Acute-Phase Retinopathy of Prematurity (e-ROP) Study: incidence, timing, and predictors.

Purpose: To determine the incidence of and timing and predictors for progression from pre-plus to plus disease, based on evaluation of images.

Methods: Two trained readers independently evaluated posterior pole images of infants from 13 North American centers for pre-plus/plus disease, stage, and zone of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Discrepancies between readers were adjudicated.

Astigmatism in school students of eastern China: prevalence, type, severity and associated risk factors.

Background: China has been undergoing dramatic economic development, accompanied by increased education load on the young children. This study is to investigate the prevalence, type, severity, and associated risk factors of astigmatism in school students in eastern China.

Method: In this cross-sectional school-based study, students underwent refraction using NIDEK non-cycloplegic autorefractor.

Design Characteristics of Geographic Atrophy Treatment Trials: Systematic Review of Registered Trials in ClinicalTrials.gov.

Purpose: Currently there is no effective treatment for geographic atrophy (GA) secondary to age-related macular degeneration, despite many trials that were completed or are ongoing. The purpose of this systematic review is to describe the key design characteristics of GA trials. Well-designed GA trials using appropriate outcome measures are critical for the discovery of an effective treatment.

Plus Disease in Telemedicine Approaches to Evaluating Acute-Phase ROP (e-ROP) Study: Characteristics, Predictors, and Accuracy of Image Grading.

Purpose: To describe characteristics and predictors of plus disease, and the accuracy of image grading for plus disease in the e-ROP Study.

Design: Secondary analyses of data from 13 North American centers.

Participants: Premature infants with birth weight (BW) <1251 g.
