Article Synopsis
  • A new two-stage sequencing batch reactor (SBR) system with iron shavings was created to tackle nutrient removal challenges and improve the formation of aerobic granular sludge (AGS) in low carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratio conditions.
  • The system effectively removed 82.8% nitrogen and 94.7% phosphorus while increasing AGS size from 45.3 μm to around 138.7 μm in the first reactor (R1) and 132.8 μm in the second (R2).
  • Specific microorganisms were enriched in R1 for phosphorus removal, while R2 showed increased levels of nitrifying bacteria and improved nitrogen removal through autotrophic denitrification.

Integrated sewage treatment equipment has been widely used, but the commonly used fillers for wastewater treatment are not suitable in rural areas due to their price and performance issues. In this study, an integrated magic filter filled with waste fillers was proposed and established for wastewater treatment. The filter was composed of functional modules and an equipment room, and the fillers in each module can be taken out separately and changed arbitrarily according to the needs of specific treatment conditions.

Crystal growth of the intermetallic alloy, NiAl, is investigated by molecular dynamics simulations with two different interatomic potentials. The calculated growth rate can be captured by the Wilson-Frenkel or Broughton-Gilmer-Jackson model at small undercoolings but deviates from the theory at deep undercoolings. Failure of the theory is found to be correlated with the dynamic processes that emerged at the interface, but not apparently with the static interface structure.
