Article Synopsis
  • Acupuncture may improve glycolipid metabolism in coronary heart disease, as indicated by a systematic review and meta-analysis of 18 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving 1,346 participants.
  • The findings showed that acupuncture, when combined with standard treatments, significantly reduced levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c).
  • Secondary outcomes also demonstrated positive effects on total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), and other metabolic markers, suggesting acupuncture could be a beneficial complementary therapy in managing coronary artery disease.

Article Synopsis
  • Migratory cells, including immune cells and fibroblasts, are important for heart repair during injuries like ischemia-reperfusion (MIRI), but excessive cell accumulation can worsen heart damage.
  • Exosomes released during myocardial injury contain miRNAs that regulate cell migration, making it vital to control these migratory cells to protect heart function.
  • Through advanced RNA sequencing, the study identified key miRNAs and genes involved in regulating cell movement, potentially offering new targets for therapy and diagnostic markers related to heart injuries.

Background: ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) is a common acute ischemia heart disease that causes serious damage to human health worldwide. Even though morbidity and mortality have significantly decreased by percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), an additional cardiac protection strategy is still required. Acupuncture therapy has presented a dominant cardiac protection in many studies lately.

Purpose: Two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) was conducted to assess the causal relationship between angina pectoris and gout. . Based on genome-wide association studies, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that were closely associated with gout were selected from the UK Biobank-Neale Lab (ukb-a-107) as genetic instrumental variables.

Objective: To explore the demographic and disease-related factors associated with acupuncture response in patients with chronic tension-type headache (CTTH).

Methods: Using data from a randomized clinical trial (218 cases) consisting of 4 weeks of baseline assessment, 8 weeks of treatment, and 24 weeks of follow-up, participants were regrouped into responders (at least a 50% reduction in monthly headache days at week 16 compared with baseline) and non-responders. Twenty-three demographic and disease-related factors associated with acupuncture response in 183 participants were analyzed by multivariable logistic regression.

Background: Acupuncture is often used as an adjunctive therapy for gastric ulcer (GU). However, there is still a lack of evidence on the appropriate and optimal interventions for acupuncture. This study aimed to optimize the acupuncture treatment of gastric ulcers based on expert consensus for guiding acupuncturists in clinical practice.

Objective: To determine the feasibility of conducting a full-scale randomized controlled trial (RCT) and investigate the basic information and safety of acupuncture for patients with chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU).

Methods: A total of 80 participants with CSU from July 2018 to July 2019 were randomly assigned to receive active acupuncture (n=41) on a fixed prescription of acupoints or sham acupuncture (n=39) with superficial acupuncture on non-acupuncture points through the completely randomized design. Patients in both groups received 5 sessions per week for 2 weeks, and participants were followed for a further 2 weeks.

Background: Psychogenic erectile dysfunction (PED) can seriously affect emotional and marital wellbeing. Electroacupuncture (EA) seems an effective method for treating PED. However, the central mechanisms underlying PED and the beneficial effects of EA treatment are unclear.

Article Synopsis
  • A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to compare the efficacy and safety of high-dose versus standard-dose second-generation antihistamines (sgAHs) for treating chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU).
  • The analysis included 13 studies, with 7 eligible for the meta-analysis, and found that high-dose sgAHs significantly improved response rates compared to standard doses.
  • However, high-dose sgAHs also led to increased rates of somnolence, but there were no significant differences in overall adverse events or withdrawal rates between the two dosing groups.

Objective: To investigate autophagy-related mechanisms of electroacupuncture (EA) action in improving gastrointestinal motility in mice with functional constipation (FC).

Methods: According to a random number table, the Kunming mice were divided into the normal control, FC and EA groups in Experiment I. The autophagy inhibitor 3-methyladenine (3-MA) was used to observe whether it antagonized the effects of EA in Experiment II.

Article Synopsis
  • The study utilized infrared thermal imaging to observe temperature changes at specific acupoints in rats experiencing chronic myocardial ischemia due to induced injury.
  • The research aimed to compare infrared radiation temperature variations in three acupoint groups (PC6, GB33, and Sham Acupoints) to understand their relationship with the heart's condition.
  • Results showed significant cardiac injury in the isoproterenol-injected rats, with notable changes in ECG readings, increased serum markers for heart damage, and altered infrared temperatures at the acupoints.

Unlabelled: Pruritus of chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) is one of the most common and irritating sensations that severely affects the quality of life. However, the changes in the functional connectivity (FC) between thalamic subregions and other brain regions have not been fully elucidated. This study aimed to explore the potential changes in brain neural circuits by focusing on various subregions of the thalamus in patients with CSU pruritus to contribute to the understanding of chronic pruritus from the perspective of central mechanisms.

Background: Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is the most common sequela of herpes zoster, and the efficacy of the treatment regimens recommended in the guidelines is not entirely reliable. Acupuncture and moxibustion are widely used complementary alternative therapies that have a positive effect on the treatment of PHN. However, there are various forms of acupuncture and moxibustion, and there are differences in efficacy between the different forms.

To determine whether electroacupuncture (EA) maintains intestinal homeostasis in diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D) rats by repairing intestinal barrier function through enteric glial cell (EGC)-derived S-nitrosoglutathione (GSNO). Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into a control group ( = 10) and an IBS-D group ( = 20). These rats received senna solution by gavage and chronic unpredictable mild stress for 14 days and were further divided into a model group ( = 10) and an EA group ( = 10).

The paper reviewed the relevant studies on dyspnea treated with acupuncture over the past 20 years, as well as the underlying neuroendocrine mechanism from the perspective of central and peripheral vagus nerves, neurotransmitter, respiratory muscle function and anti-depression-anxiety function. It revealed that the central response area was regulated by acupuncture in treatment of dyspnea, which is similar to the area affected in acupuncture analgesia. Additionally, acupuncture generates its therapeutic effects on dyspnea through promoting the release of endogenous opioid peptides and the regulation of autonomic nerve, amygdale and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis.

Background: Myocardial fibrosis changes the structure of myocardium, leads to cardiac dysfunction and induces arrhythmia and cardiac ischemia, threatening patients' lives. Electroacupuncture at PC6 (Neiguan) was previously found to inhibit myocardial fibrosis. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play a variety of regulatory functions in myocardial fibrosis, but whether electroacupuncture can inhibit myocardial fibrosis by regulating lncRNA has rarely been reported.

Angina pectoris is the most common manifestation of coronary heart disease, causing suffering in patients. Electroacupuncture at PC6 can effectively alleviate angina by regulating the expression of genes, whether the alternative splicing (AS) of genes is affected by acupuncture is still unknown. We established a rat model of myocardial ischemia-reperfusion by coronary artery ligation and confirmed electroacupuncture alleviated the abnormal discharge caused by angina pectoris measured in EMG electromyograms.
