Purpose: Pathogenesis and the associated risk factors of cataracts, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) remain unclear. We aimed to investigate causal relationships between circulating cytokine levels and the development of these diseases.

Patients And Methods: Genetic instrumental variables for circulating cytokines were derived from a genome-wide association study of 8293 European participants.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explored the link between lipid metabolism disorders and chalazion, a type of eyelid lump, using two-sample Mendelian randomization to assess causality with circulating metabolites.
  • Alanine was identified as a common metabolite that appears to have a protective effect against chalazion, while certain unsaturated fatty acids, especially omega-3s, may increase the risk.
  • The findings suggest that both alanine and specific unsaturated fatty acids could be important for further research into treatments and understanding the mechanisms behind chalazion.

Primary insomnia (PI) is an increasing concern in modern society. Cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia is the first-line recommendation, yet limited availability and cost impede its widespread use. While hypnotics are frequently used, balancing their benefits against the risk of adverse events poses challenges.

Article Synopsis
  • - The systematic review analyzed clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) regarding complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) used for anxiety management, finding that ten guidelines had reporting rates between 51.4% and 88.6%.
  • - Out of the ten CPGs, seven had moderate to high methodological quality and recommended 17 different CAM modalities, with applied relaxation being the most supported for generalized anxiety disorder.
  • - The review highlighted significant gaps in CAM recommendations for specific anxiety disorders and emphasized the need for high-quality evidence and broader interdisciplinary collaboration in guideline development.

Article Synopsis
  • Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) is becoming a popular research topic for treating depression, with a focus on therapies like acupuncture and body-mind techniques (yoga, meditation).
  • From 1993 to 2022, there was a significant increase in publications on CAM for depression, with 1,710 papers identified; the USA led in research output.
  • Future research should explore the mechanisms of CAM treatments in reducing depression, particularly in relation to psychological stress and inflammation, and promote international collaboration among researchers.

The titer of anti-severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) neutralizing antibodies (NAbs) in the human body is an essential reference for evaluating the acquired protective immunity and resistance to SARS-CoV-2 infection. In this study, a fluorescence-quenching lateral flow immunoassay (FQ-LFIA) is established for quantitative detection of anti-SARS-CoV-2 NAbs in the sera of individuals who are vaccinated or infected within 10 min. The ultrabright aggregation-induced emission properties encapsulated in nanoparticles, AIE NP, are applied in the established FQ-LFIA with gold nanoparticles to achieve a fluorescence "turn-on" competitive immunoassay.

Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains a major health killer worldwide, and the role of epigenetic regulation in CVD has been widely studied in recent decades. Herein, we perform a bibliometric study to decipher how research topics in this field have evolved during the past 2 decades.

Results: Publications on epigenetics in CVD produced during the period 2000-2022 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC).

Clinical Relevance: A bibliometric analysis is a quantitative study that utilises methods such as citation analysis to evaluate research performance. A bibliometric analysis could provide a valuable reference for ophthalmic researchers to understand the trends in epigenetics research.

Background: The number of studies on epigenetics in eye diseases has exceeded 5,000, but the progress and scope of epigenetic research on eye diseases remain unclear.

Background: There is a need for evidence-informed guidance on the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) for insomnia because of its widespread utilization and a lack of guidance on the balance of benefits and harms. This systematic review aimed to identify and summarize the CAM recommendations associated with insomnia treatment and care from existing comprehensive clinical practice guidelines (CPGs). The quality of the eligible guidelines was appraised to assess the credibility of these recommendations.

Arabidopsis is an important model organism in plant biology and genetics, and a large number of a chromatin conformation and epigenomic datasets have been generated to study the biology in Arabidopsis. To make it easier to access the accumulated epigenomic data, a user-friendly and reproducible epigenomic database, AraENCODE was developed. It contains various datasets and resources, including chromatin conformation, epigenomic, and transcriptome data, allowing researchers to investigate the regulation of epigenetic and chromatin interactions in Arabidopsis.

Background And Objective: Whilst acupuncture is widely used for treating psychosomatic diseases, there is little high-quality evidence supporting its application in comorbid perimenopausal depression (PMD) and insomnia (PMI) which are common complaints during climacteric. This feasibility, patient-assessor-blinded, randomized, sham-controlled clinical trial addresses this gap by investigating the efficacy and safety of acupuncture on depressed mood and poor sleep in women with comorbid PMD and PMI.

Methods: Seventy eligible participants were randomly assigned to either real-acupuncture (RA) or sham-acupuncture (SA) groups.

Development of a practical point-of-care test for urinalysis is crucial for early diagnosis and treatment of chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, the classical gold standard detection method depends on sophisticated instruments and complicated procedures, impeding them from being utilized in resource-limited settings and daily screening. Herein, we report a rapid point-of-care device for the simultaneous quantification of microalbuminuria and leukocyte using one drop of urine.

Anemia affects over 2 billion people worldwide, with the heaviest burden borne by women and children. At present, anemia is diagnosed by measuring hemoglobin (Hb) levels, which must be done in hospitals or commercial laboratories by skilled operators. In this work, we report a portable, affordable ($3), easy-to-operate (1 min) and accurate smartphone-based Hb analyzer (SHbA) that uses a drop of finger-pricked blood for anemia point-of-care test (POCT) applications.

Background: Previous studies have shown that cancer patients have higher rates of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection and mortality than noncancer patients. However, the differences between cancer patients undergoing regular follow-up without anticancer treatment and noncancer patients with COVID-19 have remained insufficiently investigated.

Methods: A retrospective case-control study of 52 patients with COVID-19 infection was performed with a 1:3 matched proportion of cancer patients undergoing regular follow-up without anticancer treatment and noncancer patients.
