The utilization of non-food raw materials for microbial synthesis of poly-γ-glutamic acid (γ-PGA) presents a promising alternative to conventional food-based biosynthesis. However, the complex carbon source and composition of molasses, a prevalent non-food raw material, may impose constraints on its conversion and utilization by microorganisms. This study aimed to enhance the capacity of Bacillus licheniformis to convert untreated molasses into γ-PGA through transcriptomic analysis to guide metabolic modifications.

High-performance, versatile epoxy resins (EPs) are used in a variety of fields, but the manufacture of transparent, fireproof, and strong EPs remains a major challenge. The hyperbranched, multifunctional flame retardant (DSi) is prepared by using diethanolamine, polyformaldehyde, diphenylphosphine oxide, and phenyltrimethoxysilane as raw materials in this work. When the additional amount of DSi is only 2 wt.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), the first human oncovirus discovered in 1964, has become a focal point in virology, immunology, and oncology because of its unique biological characteristics and significant role in human diseases. As we commemorate the 60th anniversary of EBV's discovery, it is an opportune moment to reflect on the major advancements in our understanding of this complex virus. In this review, we highlight key milestones in EBV research, including its virion structure and life cycle, interactions with the host immune system, association with EBV-associated diseases, and targeted intervention strategies.

Aim: Retinal photochemical damage (RPD) plays a significant role in the development of various ocular diseases, with Caspase-1 being a key contributor. This study investigates the protective effects of Caspase-1 gene-mediated pyroptosis against RPD.

Methods: Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) associated with RPD were identified through the analysis of two expression profiles from the GEO database.

Article Synopsis
  • AXIN1 is a crucial scaffold protein that regulates cell fate and plays a significant role in antiviral immunity against both DNA and RNA viruses.
  • It stabilizes the transcription factor IRF3 by preventing its degradation and increases IRF3 phosphorylation during viral infections, enhancing the production of interferon.
  • The small molecule KYA1797K improves AXIN1 and IRF3 interactions, potentially serving as an effective antiviral treatment, with reduced AXIN1 levels linked to poorer survival rates in HBV-associated liver cancer patients.

  • Researchers want to find a better blood test to help catch a type of throat cancer called oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma earlier, since current tests are not good enough.
  • They created a new tool called SENSORS that can detect important proteins in the blood that can indicate cancer, and they tested it against other methods to see if it's better.
  • In their study, they looked at blood samples from people with cancer and healthy individuals to see how well SENSORS could tell the difference and predict who might have the cancer.

Approximately 70% of treatment failures in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients are attributed to distant metastasis, yet the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. RNA 5-methylcytosine (m5C) is an emerging regulatory modification that controls gene expression and plays a critical role in tumor progression. However, there is little information on the potential roles of RNA m5C modification in NPC metastasis.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), a squamous cell carcinoma originating in the nasopharynx, is a leading malignancy in south China and other south and east Asia areas. It is frequently associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection, while there are also some NPC patients without EBV infection. Here, it is shown that the EBV+ (EBV positive) and EBV- (EBV negative) NPCs contain both shared and distinct genetic abnormalities, among the latter are increased mutations in TP53.

Photo-assisted uranium extraction from seawater (UES) is regarded as an efficient technique for uranium resource recovery, yet it currently faces many challenges, such as issues like biofouling resistance, low charge separation efficiency, slow carrier transfer, and a lack of active sites. Based on addressing the above challenges, a novel oxygen-deficient CoO/g-CN p-n heterojunction is developed for efficient photo-assisted uranium extraction from seawater. Relying on the defect-coupling heterojunction synergistic effect, the redistribution of molecular charge density formed the built-in electric field as revealed by DFT calculations, significantly enhancing the separation efficiency of carriers and accelerating their migration rate.

The coronary artery constitutes a vital vascular system that sustains cardiac function, with its primary role being the conveyance of indispensable nutrients to the myocardial tissue. When coronary artery disease occurs, it will affect the blood supply of the heart and induce myocardial ischemia. Therefore, it is of great significance to numerically simulate the coronary artery and evaluate its blood supply capacity.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is linked to various malignancies and autoimmune diseases, posing a significant global health challenge due to the lack of specific treatments or vaccines. Despite its crucial role in EBV infection in B cells, the mechanisms of the glycoprotein gp42 remain elusive. In this study, we construct an antibody phage library from 100 EBV-positive individuals, leading to the identification of two human monoclonal antibodies, 2B7 and 2C1.

Introduction: Circadian syndrome (CircS) is proposed as a novel risk cluster based on reduced sleep duration, abdominal obesity, depression, hypertension, dyslipidemia and hyperglycemia. However, the association between CircS and chronic kidney disease (CKD) remains unclear. To investigate the cross-sectional and longitudinal association between CircS and CKD, this study was performed.

Background: Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is the most prevalent type of dementia. The early change of gut microbiota is a potential biomarker for preclinical AD patients.

Objective: The study aimed to explore changes in gut microbiota characteristics in preclinical AD patients, including those with Subjective Cognitive Decline (SCD) and Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), and detect the correlation between gut microbiota characteristics and cognitive performances.

Objective: Face memory impairment significantly affects social interactions and daily functioning in individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). While deficits in recognizing familiar faces among individuals with MCI have been reported, their ability to learn and recognize unfamiliar faces remains unclear. This study examined the behavioral performance and event-related potentials (ERPs) of unfamiliar face memorization and recognition in MCI.

  • * Conducted between October 2021 and February 2022, the survey involved 102 GPwSIs across 21 cities, comparing knowledge levels among smokers, non-smokers, and different demographic groups.
  • * Results indicated that most GPwSIs recommend NRT but are skeptical about e-cigarettes' effectiveness, and many felt unprepared to support patients in quitting smoking, pointing to a need for additional training in smoking cessation counseling.

Myocardial infarction (MI) is a major cause of death and disability worldwide, but current treatments are limited by their invasiveness, side effects, and lack of efficacy. Novel drug targets for MI prevention are urgently needed. In this study, we used Mendelian randomization to identify potential therapeutic targets for MI using plasma protein quantitative trait loci as exposure variables and MI as the outcome variable.

  • Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a serious cancer prevalent in Southern China and Southeast Asia, with poor outcomes in patients who have metastasis or recurrence; understanding its development may lead to new treatments.
  • Researchers used advanced techniques like H3K27ac ChIP-seq and whole genome sequencing to study how specific genetic regions (enhancers) influence NPC and identified SOX2 as a key gene connected to tumor growth and patient survival.
  • The study concluded that SOX2, driven by super-enhancers, plays a significant role in the progression of NPC and may serve as a promising target for future therapies.
