A photogrammetric study of the effects of alveolar bone graft on nose symmetry among unilateral cleft patients.

Alveolar bone graft is considered conducive to tooth eruption and maxilla stability in unilateral cleft patients, but its contribution to nasal symmetry is still under discussion. To explore the detailed effects of alveolar bone graft on nasal symmetry and its role in rhinoplasty, 90 mixed-dentition complete unilateral cleft lip and palate patients were studied and categorised according to the operation they underwent during the mixed dentition period (bone graft, secondary rhinoplasty or bone graft and rhinoplasty combined). Standardised frontal and submental oblique photographs were taken before and after surgery, and objective measurements for the evaluation of nasal symmetry were devised.

[Study on the in vitro effects of dexamethasone at different concentrations on the growth of murine embryonic palatal mesenchymal cell].

Objective: To observe the effect of dexamethasone on the proliferation and apoptosis of embryonic palatal mesenchymal (EPM) cells, and chose a proper concentration of dexamethasone which can effect the ordinary growth of embryonic palatal mesenchymal cells.

Methods: The primary EPM cells were isolated and cultured in vitro, then we did biological assay. EPM cells were treated with different concentration dexamethasone (1 x 10(-9), 1 x 10(-8), 1 x 10(-7) and 1 x 10(-6) mol x L(-1)) respectively.

[Analysis of psychological conditions of parents of children with cleft lip and palate by using psychological scales before and after psychological treatment].

Objective: To evaluate the psychological conditions of parents of children with cleft lip and palate, and to discuss the clinical psychological treatment methods of these parents.

Methods: 100 parents of children with cleft lip and palate were selected as the parents of children with cleft lip and palate group, and 34 normal adults were selected as the control group. Two groups were tested by the life event scale (LES) and self-rating anxiety scale (SAS) to analyze their psychological states.

[Evaluation of the symmetry rate of nasal floor width and the influencing factor after primary repair].

Objective: To evaluate the symmetry rate of nasal floor width and the influencing factor for the unilateral complete cleft lip (UCCL) after repair with Huaxi technique.

Methods: 27 UCCL patients repaired with Huaxi technique were photographed before repair, 1 week and 1 year after surgery. The distance from columella point to facial midline, the nasal floor width and the fissure width were measured.

[Sleep quality and influencing factors of perimenopausal women in Ningbo region].

Objective: To investigate the sleep quality and influencing factors of perimenopausal women in Ningbo region.

Methods: A total of 527 perimenopausal women who lived in Ningbo for more than 5 years were enrolled in the study. The subjects were surveyed by self-designed questionnaire and Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI); PSQI > 7 was defined as the cut-off value for sleep quality.

[Effects of dexamethasone and vitamin B12 on expression of fibroblast growth factor 10 and fibroblast growth factor receptor 2b during early palatogenesis].

Objective: To observe the alteration of fibroblast growth factor 10 (Fgf10) and fibroblast growth factor receptor 2 (Fgfr2b) signal in mouse embryonic palate after dexamethasone and vitamin B12 exposure.

Methods: Dams were divided teratogenetic group, antagomistic group and control group and were respectively injected dexamethasone, dexamethasone and vitamin B12, and normal sodium. Dams were killed and fetus was collected at embryo 12.

[Magnetic resonance imaging of the levator veli palatini of the cleft palate patients after operation].

Objective: To observe the mobility of levator veli palatini muscle during speech in patients with repaired cleft palate and cleft lip.

Methods: MRI of the levator veli palatini muscle was taken during speech and breathing in three groups of patients: control group (cleft lip only, 8 cases), velopharyngeal incompetence (VPI) group (7 cases), velopharyngeal competence (VPC) group (10 cases). The length and the angle of the levator veli palatini muscle were compared.

[Role of HO/CO in IL-beta induced pancreatic islets apoptosis and the effect of fructose-1, 6-disphosphate].

Aim: To investigate the protective role of HO/CO systems in IL-1beta induced islest apoptosis and to explore the mechanisms of the protective effect of fructose-1, 6-disphosphate (FDP).

Methods: The pancreases of the rats were removed to collect islets cells. The cells were incubated with IL-1beta with/or FDP.

STAT5 regulates glioma cell invasion by pathways dependent and independent of STAT5 DNA binding.

STAT5 activation in primary glioma was analyzed using antibody directed against phosphorylated STAT5 (pSTAT5), in all samples robust pSTAT5 immunostaining was detected, predominantly in the nucleus. We then used immunofluorescence, transcription factor binding assays and western blotting to study EGF-modulated STAT5 activation in the human U87 glioma cell line. EGF was found to upregulate pSTAT5 levels and enhances STAT5 DNA-binding activity.

Significant evidence of association between polymorphisms in ZNF533, environmental factors, and nonsyndromic orofacial clefts in the Western Han Chinese population.

The etiology of nonsyndromic orofacial clefts (NSOC) has been considered "complex" or "multifactorial." Etiologic heterogeneity induces disparities in the results among different populations. The zinc finger protein 533 (ZNF533) and several environmental factors have been revealed to be associated with NSOC in several populations.

[It is necessary to do psychological intervention for patients with cleft lip and palate].

Psychological intervention is one of the most important parts in cleft lip/palate team approach. However, the psychological intervention has not been taken into deep consideration until now in China, and thus practical experience has not been obtained in this field. Based on a profound analysis of the reason of psychological abnormality and the psychological characteristics of cleft patients, we suggest that the psychological healthy should be the final destination of cleft lip/palate team approach.

Magnetic resonance imaging assessment of the velopharyngeal mechanism at rest and during speech in Chinese adults and children.

Purpose: Recent applications of the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique introduced accurate 3-dimensional measurements of the velopharyngeal mechanism. Further standardization of the data acquisition and analysis protocol was successfully applied to imaging adults at rest and during phonation. This study was designed to test and modify a noninvasive protocol for evaluating young children without using general anesthesia.

[Investigation of the optimized surgical procedure for the cleft palate patients over six years old].

Objective: To establish the optimized surgical procedure in our approach to treat the velopharyngeal insufficiency and improve the articulations of the patients with cleft palate over six years old.

Methods: Thirty-seven subjects over six years (including six years) old underwent the palatoplasty and sphincter pharyngoplasty simultaneously. We assessed the outcome of the surgery by perceptual speech assessment, nasopharyngoscopy and lateral cephalogram 10 to 15 months postoperatively.

110 infants with unrepaired unilateral cleft lip: An anthropometric analysis of the lip and nasal deformities.

The aim of this retrospective study was to correlate the width of the cleft lip with the severity of the nasal deformity in unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) patients before primary lip repair. Preoperative impression casts were made. Measurements were taken of the width of the cleft lip (CW), nose (NW), and nasal floor (NFW), alar base height (ABH), columella length (CL), nasal length (NL) and nasal tip protrusion (NTP).

Vitamin B12 counteracts dexamethasone-induced proliferation and apoptosis during key periods of palatogenesis in mice.

B vitamins rescue cleft palate induced by glucocorticoids in rodents; however, the mechanism of this effect remains largely unknown. The objective of our study was to assess the effect of dexamethasone and Vitamin B12 on cell proliferation and apoptosis during palatogenesis. In our study, mesenchymal cell proliferation in mouse embryonic palates decreased when the subjects were administered dexamethasone at embryo day 13.

Magnetic resonance imaging assessment of velopharyngeal structures in Chinese children after primary palatal repair.

Background: Velopharyngeal inadequacy (VPI) after primary palatal repair remains a persistent problem despite advanced surgical techniques. Velopharyngeal inadequacy has significant negative impacts on patients' speech intelligibility and quality. Previous studies have produced conflicting results regarding the causes of VPI, which are likely due to limitations in two-dimensional imaging techniques used as well as failure to include matched groups with repaired cleft palate and differing velopharyngeal outcome.

A comparative study of fluctuating asymmetry in Chinese families with nonsyndromic cleft palate.

Objective: To compare the asymmetry displayed by Chinese patients with nonsyndromic cleft palate (NSCP), their unaffected parents, and a control population.

Method: With rigorous inclusion criteria, a total number of 675 individuals with NSCP, 675 parental pairs of these patients, and 650 control individuals were involved in this case-control study. Size-adjusted fluctuating asymmetry (FA) scores were calculated by data on 10 variables.

A photoelectrochemical sensor based on CdS-polyamidoamine nano-composite film for cell capture and detection.

We demonstrated herein a newly developed photoelectrochemical cell-sensor for the determination of SMMC-7721 human hepatoma carcinoma cells (SMMC-7721 cells) by using a photosensitive CdS-polyamidoamine (G4) nano-composite film (CdS-PAMAM). The film was generated by electrodeposition method. The presence of PAMAM in the film eliminated the surface defects of CdS nanoparticles and therefore resulted in a greatly enhanced photocurrent and a reduced dark current.

Incidence of palatal fistula after palatoplasty with levator veli palatini retropositioning according to Sommerlad.

The purpose of this study was to find out the incidence of palatal fistula and study the factors that influence its development after palatoplasty with repositioning of the levator veli palatini. We retrospectively reviewed 176 consecutive repairs of cleft palates during a 2-year period (2004-2006). The age of the patients at the time of repair ranged from 12 to 30 months (mode 17 months).
