Background/aims: Endoscopic radiofrequency ablation (ERFA) is a treatment option for superficial esophageal squamous cell neoplasia (ESCN), with a relatively low risk of stenosis; however, the long-term outcomes remain unclear. We aimed to compare the long-term outcomes of patients with widespread superficial ESCN who underwent endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) or ERFA.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of patients with superficial ESCN who underwent ESD or ERFA between January 2015 and December 2021.

Article Synopsis
  • Immunotherapy for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) shows varying effectiveness, and recent research highlights the role of circular RNAs (circRNAs) in the tumor microenvironment.
  • A comprehensive network of immune-related circRNA, microRNA, and mRNA was constructed, comprising 16 circRNAs, 13 microRNAs, and 1,560 mRNAs, revealing the competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) dynamics in ESCC.
  • Key findings included the identification of cancer-associated fibroblast (CAF) modules linked to immune scores, with specific collagen family genes showing elevated expression and potential as targets for ESCC treatment, contributing to more personalized clinical approaches.

The , also known as "Feng Dan" have a crucial role in folk medicine to treat lumbar muscles strain, knee osteoarthritis and cervical spondylosis. In this study, four new phenolic compounds, specifically Paeoniaostiph A-E (-) phenolic compounds were characterised through spectroscopic techniques, including 1D and 2D NMR, HRESIMS, UV, IR, and electronic circular dichroism computations to explore their structures. Cytotoxicity and NO production inhibition of the new phenolic compounds were also studied.

The aim of this study was to assess the effects of local wound infiltration anaesthesia on postoperative wound pain in patients undergoing open liver resection. The Cochrane Library, PubMed, EMBASE, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM) and Wanfang databases were searched. The search period spanned from database creation to December 2022.

The ethnobotanical plant has been used for hundreds of years for Dai people in Yunnan Province, China. Previously, chemical investigations on this plant have revealed that pregnane glycosides were the main biological constituents. Nine new pregnane glycosides, marsdeosides A-I (-), were isolated from cultivated dried stems of the medicinal plant in this study.

Background: Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy is critical for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) detection; however, endoscopists require long-term training to avoid missing superficial lesions.

Aim: To develop a deep learning computer-assisted diagnosis (CAD) system for endoscopic detection of superficial ESCC and investigate its application value.

Methods: We configured the CAD system for white-light and narrow-band imaging modes based on the YOLO v5 algorithm.

The cytokinesis-block micronucleus assay has proven to be a reliable technique for biological dosimetry. This study aimed to establish the dose-response curve for X-ray-induced micronucleus. Peripheral blood samples from three healthy donors were irradiated with various doses and scoring criteria by the micronuclei (MN) in binucleated cells.

Article Synopsis
  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) in colonoscopy can enhance the detection of polyps and adenomas, potentially reducing missed diagnoses, but its effectiveness needs further validation due to previous reliance on limited datasets.
  • A study developed and tested a deep learning-based Computer-Assisted Detection (CADe) system using over 71,000 high-quality images collected from 20 different centers, aiming for improvement in real-time polyp identification during clinical procedures.
  • The results showed that CADe achieved high sensitivity (98.4%) and specificity in identifying polyps during colonoscopies, outperforming traditional methods, although issues like light reflections and fecal fluid caused some false positives.

Background/aims: Single-balloon enteroscopy (SBE) has been widely used in diagnosing small bowel disease. We conducted this study to systematically appraise its technical and clinical performance.

Methods: Studies on SBE published by September 2018 were systematically searched.

The studies on post-endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) pancreatitis (PEP) in pancreas divisum (PD) patients without chronic pancreatitis (CP) are rare. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the incidence of PEP in PD patients without CP and the risk and protective factors for PEP. Consecutive patients with symptomatic PD that underwent ERCP from January 2005 to December 2017 were retrospectively analyzed.

BACKGROUND Adenocarcinoma of the lung is a type of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Clinical outcome is associated with tumor grade, stage, and subtype. This study aimed to identify RNA expression profiles, including long noncoding RNA (lncRNA), microRNA (miRNA), and mRNA, associated with clinical outcome in adenocarcinoma of the lung using bioinformatics data.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the safety and efficiency of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) in Chinese patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Methods: This was a single-center, prospective study including 27 Chinese patients with GERD. The outcomes in all patients were evaluated before and at 3, 6, and 12 months after RFA, including their GERD health-related quality of life (GERD-HRQL) score, esophageal acid exposure, DeMeester score, lower esophageal sphincter (LES) resting pressure, and patient's satisfaction with symptom control.

Background: Tens of millions of gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures are performed every year in China, but the quality varies significantly and related factors are complex. Individual endoscopist- and endoscopy division-related factors may be useful to establish a model to measure and predict the quality of endoscopy.

Aim: To establish a model to measure and predict the quality of gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures in mainland China.

Background And Aim: Although several randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have reported that supplemental simethicone (SIM) can improve bowel preparation based on polyethylene glycol, there is no consensus as to whether SIM can ultimately increase the adenoma detection rate (ADR) during colonoscopy. A meta-analysis was performed to assess the effect of SIM on ADR during colonoscopy.

Methods: Databases including PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library were searched to find relevant RCTs.

Eight new ent-kaurane diterpene fatty acid esters, namely caffarolides A-H (1-8), were isolated from green beans of Coffea arabica. Their chemical structures were confirmed by extensive spectroscopic analysis including 1D, 2D NMR (HSQC, HMBC, H-H COSY, and ROESY), HRMS, IR and CD spectra and by GC-FID analysis. Interestingly, the diterpene moiety of these new compounds first occurred in genus Coffea.

Three new limonoid-type triterpenoids, namely toonasins A-C (1-3) with a rare lactam E ring, along with six known compounds (4-9) were isolated from the barks of Toona sinensis. The structures of new compounds were elucidated by interpretation of spectroscopic data, and the relative configuration of compound 1 was further characterized by X-ray crystallographic analyses. The isolated compounds were evaluated for their cytotoxic activities against five human tumor cell lines (HL-60, SMMC-7721, A-549, MCF-7 and SW480), and compounds 3 and 5 showed weak cytotoxicities.
