Hypoxia ischemia (HI) is a leading cause of cerebral palsy and long-term neurological sequelae in infants. Given that mitochondrial dysfunction in neurons contributes to HI brain damage, this study aimed to investigate the regulatory role of miR-9-5p in mitochondrial function following HI injury. Overexpression of miR-9-5p in HI mice or HO-exposed PC12 cells suppressed neuronal injury, associated with increased mitochondrial copy number, normalizing mitochondrial membrane potential, improved nuclear factor-erythroid factor 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) activation, and downregulation of Keap1.

Background: High-precision and broad-range pH detection is critical for health status assessment, such as signal transduction, enzyme activity, endocytosis, and cell proliferation and apoptosis. Although pH-responsive ratiometric fluorescent probes offer an effective pH monitoring strategy, their preparation often requires multi-step modification and decreases fluorescence efficiency and stability. Herein, we developed a simple method to prepare fluorescent Si dots with dual emission centers for high-precision and broad-range pH monitoring, and the detection of urease based on pH-responsive Si dots and pH monitoring in living cell was further explored.

Article Synopsis
  • Real-time risk monitoring is essential in ICUs but often struggles with a lack of updates for clinical variables, prompting the development of a new framework that incorporates uncertainties into existing risk assessment systems like the SOFA score.
  • The study analyzed data from 5,351 patients in a Cardiothoracic ICU, utilizing machine learning models to enhance real-time SOFA scores and account for uncertainties, with validation showing improved predictive capabilities for mortality and readmission.
  • Results demonstrated that the new model outperformed traditional SOFA scores and quick SOFA in predicting outcomes, suggesting it could lead to more efficient testing and better patient care in clinical settings.

The mere token strategy, which adds a small reward (token) to an option to increase attractiveness, is widely used in the consumer field. However, we conducted six studies that seek to confirm the 'token undermining effect', where adding a small token to a sooner and smaller reward (SS) paired with a later and larger reward (LL) decreases the preference for the SS. The results showed that the effect persists across various choice sets, participant populations, reward amounts, delays, outcome properties and regardless of whether the scenarios are incentivized.
