Objectives: The effect of isoprenylcysteine carboxymethyltransferase (ICMT) silencing on the migration and invasion of tongue squamous cell carcinoma was investigated by constructing the small interfering RNA (siRNA) of ICMT.

Methods: Through liposomal transfection, siRNA was transfected into human tongue squamous cell carcinoma CAL-27 and SCC-4 cells (ICMT-siRNA group) with a negative control group (transfected with NC-siRNA) and a blank control group (transfected with a transfection reagent but not with siRNA). Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction was performed to analyze the mRNA expression of ICMT and RhoA in each group of cells after transfection and to measure the silencing efficiency.

During the bidirectional Glenn shunt procedure in small infants, the standard right-angle venous cannula is frequently placed in the innominate vein for establishing the temporary veno-atrial bypass without cardiopulmonary bypass, but it should be small enough to allow flow to pass around it from the internal jugular vein opposite to the side the cannula is directed. Small cannula may induce the inadequacy of venous drainage. We developed a modified right-angle venous cannula and placed it within the innominate vein for sufficient venous drainage.

Background: In the conventional ascending replacement for acute type A aortic dissection, the distal aortic anastomosis is frequently performed at the dissected site, and postoperative residual dissection in the arch and downstream aorta still occurs in most patients. We used open placement of a fenestrated stent graft during this operation.

Objective: To make the open placement of the triple-branched stent graft technique suitable for most patients with acute type A aortic dissection to achieve effective individual total arch repair, we developed a self-adaptive triple-branched stent graft and arch open technique. In this study, we report the clinical experience and outcomes of total arch repair using implantation of this self-adaptive triple-branched stent graft with the aid of the arch open technique.

Recently, the superior approach with transaction of the superior vena cava was introduced for the repair of supracardiac anomalies in adults. We developed a bidirectional right-angle venous cannula and placed it within the innominate vein to make the modified superior approach with the superior caval transection suitable for neonates and tiny infants. Objective: To improve the method for monitoring sleep state and respiratory rhythm of SD rats, providing a solution for rats' chewing on the wires, signal loss and instability problems in the animal model of sleep apnea syndrome (SAS).

Methods: We improved monitoring electrodes of both electrocorticogram (ECoG) and electromyogram (EMG), signal circuit and animal operation.

Results: Operation time was shortened and wound exposure time was reduced, which made it easier for postoperative recovery.

Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the safety and feasibility of intraoperative device closure of the doubly committed subarterial ventricular septal defect (VSD).

Methods: From January 2009 to January 2010, we enrolled 15 patients with doubly committed subarterial VSD who underwent intraoperative device closure in our institution. Our method involved a minimal inferior median incision that was performed after full evaluation of the doubly committed subarterial VSD by real-time transesophageal echocardiographic guidance, and the insertion of the device through the delivery sheath to occlude the VSD.

In total arch replacement for acute type A aortic dissection, the left subclavian artery anastomosis and the distal anastomosis at the descending aorta are often remarkably difficult because of the deep surgical field. We developed a single-branched stent graft that was constructed by adding a side arm stent-graft to a conventional aortic stent graft. By its open placement into the origin of the left subclavian artery and the descending aorta, the left subclavian artery anastomosis could be avoided, and the distal aortic anastomosis was performed at the proximal arch between the brachiocephalic artery and the left common carotid artery.

Background: Recent studies suggest that the common variant in the glutathione S-transferase (GST) M1 (GSTM1) and T1 (GSTT1) gene is associated with the risk of smoking-related coronary artery disease (CAD). Intra-ethnic as well as inter-ethnic differences are known to impact the frequencies of GST gene polymorphisms, thus influencing its interactive effect with tobacco smoking on CAD risk. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the interaction of the genetic polymorphisms of GSTM1 and GSTT1 with cigarette smoking and the risk of CAD in a Chinese population.
