The cases of 9 patients with aneurysms involving the aortic arch, repaired under profound hypothermia (average, 15.5 degrees C) and circulatory arrest, are presented. Five patients underwent elective operation and 4, emergency operation.

Six cases of combined coronary artery bypass graft and abdominal aortic aneurysmectomy were performed in a 1-year period at the Washington Hospital Center. All cases except one were uncomplicated and the average hospital stay for patients with no complications was less than 10 days. We found that there were distinct advantages in combining these two procedures.

On occasion they are used to increase flow through stenotic areas where endarterectomy might be counterproductive. The following article delineates a fairly efficient way of preparing patch grafts in a reproducible manner.

The method consisted of collecting airborne acetic anhydride on a solid sorbent, desorbing it with acetone and analyzing it by gas chromatography. During the development of this method various parameters such as selection of column, selection of solid sorbent, selection of desorber solvent, effects of humidity, flow rate, total sample volume, desorption efficiency, and shelf-life of samples were studied.

A novel method for monitoring occupational exposure to ethylene oxide was developed. Ethylene oxide was collected on Columbia JXC activated carbon, desorbed with carbon disulfide, and analyzed by gas chromatography using a TERGITOL TMN or UCON LB55OX column. Several parameters such as selection of adsorbent and column; effects of humidity, sampling rate and volume; shelf-life; interference from ten contaminants; desorption technique and calibration curve were investigated.

A weighed amount of a "special" semi-reinforcing (SRF) carbon black, made in 1964 and not considered to be typical for furnace blacks, was extracted with triple distilled benzene for 24 hours. The separation of carcinogens from the benzene extract was achieved by gas chromatography on a 5 ft x 0.25 inch stainless steel column packed with 3% OV-1 on chromosorb W.
