Excessive levels of the glycolysis metabolite methylglyoxal (MG) elicit enhanced expression of adhesion molecules which foster leukocyte-endothelial cell interactions. The signaling mechanisms involved remain elusive. To address this, we investigated the signal transduction of leukocyte- and endothelial-expressed phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) effector kinases glycogen synthase kinase 3 (GSK3) and serum- and glucocorticoid-inducible kinase 1 (SGK1) in the regulation of MG-elicited leukocyte recruitment.

Low Grade Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasm with Pseudomyxoma Peritonei: An Enigma for Pathologist.

Malignant mucinous neoplasms of the appendix is an infrequently encountered entity. Extra-appendiceal spread of these tumor is one of the commonest etiology of pseudomyxoma peritonei, which demands a hightened vigilance in their early diagnosis. Although low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (LAMNs) largely stay confined to the appendix, but they can spread to the peritoneum as pseudomyxoma peritonei leading to an unpredictable outcome.

Cytological diagnosis of chondroblastoma: diagnostic challenge for the cytopathologist.

Chondroblastoma is an uncommon osseous neoplasm that accounts for less than 1% of all bone tumours. It characteristically arises in the epiphysis or epimetaphyseal region of long bones and has been reported to affect people of all ages with slight male predilection. WHO has defined chondroblastoma as 'a benign, cartilage-producing neoplasm usually arising in the epiphyses of skeletally immature patients'.

Suspected hydatid cyst of liver harbouring an aggressive desmoplastic small round cell tumour.

Among the group of small round cell tumours, there is a distinct and rare tumour known as desmoplastic small round cell tumour (DSRCT). DSRCT presents as multiple, widespread masses in the abdomen and pelvis and may be accompanied by extensive tumour implants throughout the peritoneum as the tumour is known to spread diffusely along serosal surfaces. We discuss a case of DSRCT in a 16-year-old boy who presented with abdominal pain since 2 years, a non-tender mass was palpable on the right upper quadrant of the abdomen, ultrasonographic and CT findings suggested hydatid cyst of liver.

Eosinophilic granuloma of the mandible: a diagnostic dilemma.

Eosinophilic granuloma (EG) is a rare histiocytic disorder resulting from clonal proliferation of Langerhans cells. It accounts for less than 1% of all osseous neoplasms and has a predilection for involving the axial skeleton. Although suspicion of the disease may arise from clinical features and radiographic demonstration of destructive bone lesions, it is still difficult to make a correct diagnosis without proper pathological evaluation.

Metastatic lymphadenopathy in Kashmir valley: a clinicopathological study.

Background: Lymphadenopathy is a common presentation in both benign and malignant diseases which need to be diagnosed without delay. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) helps us diagnose a disease and follow its course, including the response to therapy.

Aim: This study aimed to analyze the clinicopathological features of metastatic lymphadenopathy and the diagnostic utility of FNAC in our setting.

Low-temperature deposition of BaCuSF, a visible through mid-infrared p-type transparent conductor.

Barium copper sulfur fluoride (BaCuSF) is a p-type transparent conductor (p-TC) that, when doped with potassium, exhibits exceptionally high conductivity. The results of a detailed optical and electronic characterization of BaCuSF thin films deposited at a substrate temperature of 100 °C are presented. X-ray diffractometry shows the presence of a cubic BaCuSF phase.

Effect of carbon monoxide donor CORM-2 on vitamin D3 metabolism.

Background/aims: Carbon monoxide (CO) interferes with cytochrome-dependent cellular functions and acts as gaseous transmitter. CO is released from CO-releasing molecules (CORM) including tricarbonyl-dichlororuthenium (II) dimer (CORM-2), molecules considered for the treatment of several disorders including vascular dysfunction, inflammation, tissue ischemia and organ rejection. Cytochrome P450-sensitive function include formation of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25(OH)2D3) by renal 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 1-alpha-hydroxylase (Cyp27b1).

Could Thoracoscore predict postoperative mortality in patients undergoing pneumonectomy?

Objectives: Thoracoscore is incorporated in the new British Thoracic Society and National Institute of Health and clinical Excellence guidelines to evaluate the operative mortality risk of patients undergoing thoracic surgery. This study examines the accuracy of Thoracoscore in predicting postoperative mortality in patients undergoing pneumonectomy.

Methods: All patients who underwent pneumonectomy from January 1998 to March 2008 were included.

Human settlement and migrations along sides of Bay-of-Bengal have played a vital role in shaping the genetic landscape of Bangladesh, Eastern India and Southeast Asia. Bangladesh and Northeast India form the vital land bridge between the South and Southeast Asia. To reconstruct the population history of this region and to see whether this diverse region geographically acted as a corridor or barrier for human interaction between South Asia and Southeast Asia, we, for the first time analyzed high resolution uniparental (mtDNA and Y chromosome) and biparental autosomal genetic markers among aboriginal Bangladesh tribes currently speaking Tibeto-Burman language.

Methylglyoxal modulates endothelial nitric oxide synthase-associated functions in EA.hy926 endothelial cells.

Background: Increased levels of the sugar metabolite methylglyoxal (MG) in vivo were shown to participate in the pathophysiology of vascular complications in diabetes. Alterations of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) activity by hypophosphorylation of the enzyme and enhanced monomerization are found in the diabetic milieu, and the regulation of this still remains undefined. Using various pharmacological approaches, we elucidate putative mechanisms by which MG modulates eNOS-associated functions of MG-stimulated superoxide O₂•⁻ production, phosphorylation status and eNOS uncoupling in EA.

Functional MRI and pain.

Purpose Of Review: This article reviews the current state of knowledge in functional MRI (fMRI) research related to pain with primary focus on clinical studies.

Recent Findings: With fMRI, the subjective effects of pain (sensory, affect, emotion, and motor components) can be objectively imaged. Although the conventional fMRI technique has been the isolation of regions in the brain transmitting and modulating pain, functional connectivity measurement can identify functionally linked regions associated with pain processing.

Vitamin D deficiency-induced muscle wasting occurs through the ubiquitin proteasome pathway and is partially corrected by calcium in male rats.

Vitamin D deficiency leads to muscle wasting in both animals and humans. A vitamin D-deficient rat model was created using Sprague Dawley male rats. We studied the involvement of the ubiquitin proteasome and other proteolytic pathways in vitamin D deficiency-induced muscle atrophy.

Mean platelet volume is decreased in HIV-infected women.

Objectives: HIV infection is associated with higher than expected cardiovascular event rates and lowered platelet counts. These conditions are associated with an elevation of mean platelet volume (MPV). The present study compared MPV in HIV-infected and uninfected women and identified factors influencing MPV values in HIV-infected women.

NMR relaxation in systems with magnetic nanoparticles: a temperature study.

Purpose: To measure and model nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxation enhancement due to the presence of gadolinium (Gd)-substituted Zn-Mn ferrite magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) at different temperatures.

Exploring antiurolithic effects of gokshuradi polyherbal ayurvedic formulation in ethylene-glycol-induced urolithic rats.

Gokshuradi Yog (GY) is a polyherbal ayurvedic formulation used traditionally for several decades in India for the treatment of urolithiasis. The aim of the present study was to determine the underlying mechanism of GY action in the management of calcium oxalate urolithiasis. The effect of Gokshuradi polyherbal aqueous extracts (GPAEs) was studied on various biochemical parameters involved in calcium oxalate formation by employing in vitro and in vivo methods.

ICAM-1-mediated leukocyte adhesion is critical for the activation of endothelial LSP1.

Leukocyte-endothelial interaction triggers signaling events in endothelial cells prior to transendothelial migration of leukocytes. Leukocyte-specific protein 1 (LSP1), expressed in endothelial cells, plays a pivotal role in regulating subsequent recruitment steps following leukocyte adhesion. In neutrophils, LSP1 is activated by phosphorylation of its serine residues by molecules downstream of p38 MAPK and PKC.

Clinicopathological study of gall bladder carcinoma with special reference to gallstones: our 8-year experience from eastern India.

Gallbladder carcinoma (GBC) is the commonest cancer of the biliary tree and the most frequent cause of death from biliary malignancies. The incidence of GBC shows prominent geographic, age, race, and gender-related differences and is 4-7 times higher in patients with gallstones. This prompted us to study the clinicopathological aspects of the disease and the incidence of gallstones in gallbladder carcinoma patients, in this part of India.
