The global implications of a Russian gas pivot to Asia.

Recent years have seen unprecedented shifts in global natural gas trade, precipitated in large part by Russia's war on Ukraine. How this regional conflict impacts the future of natural gas markets is subject to three interconnected factors: (i) Russia's strategy to regain markets for its gas exports; (ii) Europe's push towards increased liquified natural gas (LNG) and the pace of its low carbon transition; and (iii) China's gas demand and how it balances its climate and energy security objectives. A scenario modelling approach is applied to explore the potential implications of this geopolitical crisis.

Detection and characterization of Langya virus in , Republic of Korea.

This study reports the identification of Langya virus Korea (LayV KOR) during the surveillance of shrews in the Republic of Korea. LayV KOR represents the first identification of LayV outside of China, exhibiting approximately 80% and 95.5% homologies at nucleotide and amino acid levels.

Molecular detection and genomic characterization of Samak Micromys paramyxovirus-1 and -2 in Micromys minutus, Republic of Korea.

Background: The discovery of viruses in small mammalian populations, particularly rodents, has expanded the family Paramyxoviridae. The overlap in habitats between rodents and humans increases the risk of zoonotic events, underscoring the importance of active surveillance. Rodent species, such as Apodemus agrarius, are natural hosts for Paramyxoviridae in the Republic of Korea (ROK).

No new fossil fuel projects: The norm we need.

An Assessment of the Imaging Performance of Hand-Held Ultrasound Scanners Using the Edinburgh Pipe Phantom.

Objective: Although hand-held ultrasound devices (HHUSDs) are currently used for a diverse range of diagnostic and interventional applications the imaging performance of such scanners is rarely considered. The aim of this study was to assess the imaging performance of a wide-range of HHUSDs and compare their imaging performance to cart-based systems utilized for the same clinical applications.

Methods: The grayscale imaging performances of 19 HHUSDs from eight different manufacturers, manufactured between 2016 and 2021, were measured using a figure-of-merit known as the resolution integral.

Protracted fibrinolysis resistance following cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass: A prospective observational study of clinical associations and patient outcomes.

Background: Surgery on cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) elicits a pleiomorphic systemic host response which, when severe, requires prolonged intensive care support. Given the substantial cross-talk between inflammation, coagulation, and fibrinolysis, the aim of this hypothesis-generating observational study was to document the kinetics of fibrinolysis recovery post-CPB using ClotPro® point-of-care viscoelastometry. Tissue plasminogen activator-induced clot lysis time (TPA LT, s) was correlated with surgical risk, disease severity, organ dysfunction and intensive care length of stay (ICU LOS).

Unpacking the modeling process for energy policy making.

This article explores how the modeling of energy systems may lead to an undue closure of alternatives by generating an excess of certainty around some of the possible policy options. We retrospectively exemplify the problem with the case of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) global modeling in the 1980s. We discuss different methodologies for quality assessment that may help mitigate this issue, which include Numeral Unit Spread Assessment Pedigree (NUSAP), diagnostic diagrams, and sensitivity auditing (SAUD).

Global fossil fuel reduction pathways under different climate mitigation strategies and ambitions.

The mitigation scenarios database of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's Sixth Assessment Report is an important resource for informing policymaking on energy transitions. However, there is a large variety of models, scenario designs, and resulting outputs. Here we analyse the scenarios consistent with limiting warming to 2 °C or below regarding the speed, trajectory, and feasibility of different fossil fuel reduction pathways.

Fossil extraction bans and carbon taxes: Assessing their interplay through multiple models.

Given concerns about the ambition and effectiveness of current climate policies, a case has been made for the combination of demand side policies such as carbon pricing with supply side bans on fossil fuel extraction. However, little is known about their interplay in the context of climate stabilization strategies. Here, we present a multi-model assessment quantifying the effectiveness of supply side policies and their interactions with demand-side ones.

'The best thing since sliced bread': Patient experiences of teleoncology in western NSW.

Objective: This study explored experiences of rural cancer patients who were receiving treatments by remote video-assisted chemotherapy (RVAC) or participating in clinical trials remotely.

Setting: Participants lived in Coonabarabran or Dubbo in western NSW.

Participants: Seven cancer patients undergoing treatment for breast, bladder or colon cancer, renal cell carcinoma or lymphoma.

Referring Provider Opinions of Pediatric Cardiology Evaluations Performed by Nurse Practitioners.

In the setting of physician shortages, nurse practitioner (NP) roles have evolved, with increasing independence across most healthcare settings. We sought to characterize referring clinician perceptions of NP-performed outpatient pediatric cardiology consultations. We electronically distributed to pediatric and family medicine physicians and NPs in Arkansas our 11-item survey assessing the acceptability of pediatric cardiology consultations being completed by an NP under varying circumstances.

Heart Transplantation in Children With Down Syndrome.

Background Children with Down syndrome (DS) have a high risk of cardiac disease that may prompt consideration for heart transplantation (HTx). However, transplantation in patients with DS is rarely reported. This project aimed to collect and describe waitlist and post- HTx outcomes in children with DS.

Vortex fluidic induced mass transfer across immiscible phases.

Mixing immiscible liquids typically requires the use of auxiliary substances including phase transfer catalysts, microgels, surfactants, complex polymers and nano-particles and/or micromixers. Centrifugally separated immiscible liquids of different densities in a 45° tilted rotating tube offer scope for avoiding their use. Micron to submicron size topological flow regimes in the thin films induce high inter-phase mass transfer depending on the nature of the two liquids.

Erectile dysfunction predicts mortality in middle-aged and older men independent of their sex steroid status.

Background: erectile dysfunction is associated with mortality, whereas the association between low testosterone (T) and higher mortality remains controversial. Sexual dysfunction and low T often coexist, but the relative importance of sexual symptoms versus low T in predicting mortality is not known. We studied the interrelationships between sex steroids and sexual symptoms with all-cause mortality in a large prospective cohort of European men.

Selected 'Starter kit' energy system modelling data for selected countries in Africa, East Asia, and South America (#CCG, 2021).

Energy system modeling can be used to develop internally-consistent quantified scenarios. These provide key insights needed to mobilise finance, understand market development, infrastructure deployment and the associated role of institutions, and generally support improved policymaking. However, access to data is often a barrier to starting energy system modeling, especially in developing countries, thereby causing delays to decision making.

Subsequent controlled reduction aids in ensuring correct disulfide bridging. In vivo, these problems are overcome through interaction with chaperones.

Unextractable fossil fuels in a 1.5 °C world.

Parties to the 2015 Paris Agreement pledged to limit global warming to well below 2 °C and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 °C relative to pre-industrial times. However, fossil fuels continue to dominate the global energy system and a sharp decline in their use must be realized to keep the temperature increase below 1.

Incidence of Paget's disease of bone in the UK: evidence of a continuing decline.

Objectives: To characterize the incidence of clinically diagnosed Paget's disease of bone in the UK during 1999-2015 and to determine variations in the incidence of disease by age, sex, geography and level of deprivation.

Methods: Incident cases of Paget's disease occurring between 1999 and 2015 were identified from primary care records. Overall crude incidence and incidence stratified by age and sex was calculated each year from 1999 to 2015.

Creating a Radiology Call Center Hotline and "HOT" Sites: Centralizing Radiology Questions and Cohorting Out-patient Care During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Introduction: Amidst COVID-19 crisis, confusion exists over current radiology operations due to influx of new data and new protocols. In order to decrease confusion and reduce imaging facility related COVID-19 transmissions, we created a dedicated radiology COVID-19 call center and dedicated out-patient COVID-19 imaging sites (referred to "HOT" sites).

Materials And Methods: We created a central radiology call center hotline, staffed by our radiology technologists, to answer all radiology questions related to COVID-19 and help with scheduling exams.

Comparative structural and mechanistic studies of 4-hydroxy-tetrahydrodipicolinate reductases from Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Vibrio vulnificus.

Background: The products of the lysine biosynthesis pathway, meso-diaminopimelate and lysine, are essential for bacterial survival. This paper focuses on the structural and mechanistic characterization of 4-hydroxy-tetrahydrodipicolinate reductase (DapB), which is one of the enzymes from the lysine biosynthesis pathway. DapB catalyzes the conversion of (2S, 4S)-4-hydroxy-2,3,4,5-tetrahydrodipicolinate (HTPA) to 2,3,4,5-tetrahydrodipicolinate in an NADH/NADPH dependent reaction.
