The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between the size of oronasal openings in the hard palate and speech deficits. Audiotape recordings and plaster casts were taken according to standard procedures at 5 and 7 years of age from 22 consecutive children born with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate treated at Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Göteborg, Sweden. The soft palate had been repaired before the age of 12 months, whereas the cleft in the hard palate was left unrepaired, to be closed later.
