Different Types of Survey-Based Environmental Representations: Egocentric vs. Allocentric Cognitive Maps.

The goal of the current study was to show the existence of distinct types of survey-based environmental representations, egocentric and allocentric, and provide experimental evidence that they are formed by different types of navigational strategies, path integration and map-based navigation, respectively. After traversing an unfamiliar route, participants were either disoriented and asked to point to non-visible landmarks encountered on the route (Experiment 1) or presented with a secondary spatial working memory task while determining the spatial locations of objects on the route (Experiment 2). The results demonstrate a double dissociation between the navigational strategies underlying the formation of allocentric and egocentric survey-based representation.

As part of measures to address this concern, the Singapore government will implement a mandatory color-coded front-of-package (FOP) nutrition label for beverages, called Nutri-Grade (NG), which will complement the existing FOP label, Healthier Choice Symbol (HCS) logos, currently displayed on select food and beverage items. Temporomandibular arthritis will lengthen a rodent's meal duration. We hypothesized that meal duration would also lengthen after tooth pulp exposure, suggesting that this behavior could be used to measure tooth nociception. To test this hypothesis, we placed rats in feeding units and subjected 4 anterior mandibular molars to pulp exposure, with and without pre-treatment with the analgesic buprenorphine-HCl.

Reduced GABA(A) receptor α6 expression in the trigeminal ganglion alters inflammatory TMJ hypersensitivity.

Trigeminal ganglia neurons express the GABA(A) receptor subunit alpha 6 (Gabrα6) but the role of this particular subunit in orofacial hypersensitivity is unknown. In this report the function of Gabrα6 was tested by reducing its expression in the trigeminal ganglia and measuring the effect of this reduction on inflammatory temporomandibular joint (TMJ) hypersensitivity. Gabrα6 expression was reduced by infusing the trigeminal ganglia of male Sprague Dawley rats with small interfering RNA (siRNA) having homology to either the Gabrα6 gene (Gabrα6 siRNA) or no known gene (control siRNA).

Preconcentration method on modified silica fiber for chromium speciation.

A new method involving pre-concentration on modified silica fiber is described for the speciation of chromium(III) [Cr(III)] and chromium(VI) [Cr(VI)] in aqueous media. This method is based on the different chelating behavior of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) with morpholine-4-carbodithioate (MDTC). Both complexes are extracted on silica fiber modified by sol-gel technology by using 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APS) as a precursor.

Objective: Fcγ receptor III (FcγRIII; CD16) is a receptor expressed on immune cells that selectively binds IgG molecules. IgG binding results in cellular activation and cytokine release. IgG is an important factor in arthritis and can be found in the arthritic temporomandibular joint (TMJ).

Background: Estrogen is known to play role in temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders and estrogen effects can be mediated by estrogen receptor (ER) alpha present in the TMJ. Cells expressing the estrogen receptor ERalpha are present in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) but changes in expression due to estrogen and inflammation have not been characterized. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) and multipotent adult progenitor cells (MAPC) copurify from the bone marrow. Past studies have shown that bone marrow-derived cells transplanted into the periodontium obtain characteristics of several periodontal cells types, such as alveolar bone, periodontal fibroblasts, and cementoblasts. Bone marrow-derived cell populations are heterogeneous mixtures of different cell types.

Transpupillary thermotherapy for treatment of choroidal neovascularization secondary to age-related macular degeneration in Indian eyes.

Aim: To evaluate the efficacy of transpupillary thermotherapy (TTT) for treatment of subfoveal choroidal neovascularisation (CNV) secondary to age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and to define accurate power settings for this procedure in Indian eyes.

Methods: A prospective, nonrandomised study of 160 eyes of 144 patients with subfoveal CNV. The laser settings included 2 mm spot and 300 mw power or 3 mm spot and 400-600 mw power.

Histoplasmosis of the liver: a rare case.

A 39 year old male presented with history of fever and jaundice for 3 months. A liver biopsy showed numerous ovoid fungal bodies around 5 mm in size in the macrophages and Kupffer cells. A diagnosis of hepatic histoplasmosis was made which is an uncommon entity in our country.
