Introduction: The pathogenesis of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) remains unknown. In particular, little is known of the involvement of the motor cortex and corticospinal system.
Methods: Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was used to assess corticospinal function in terms of latency and threshold of motor-evoked potentials (MEPs) in thenar muscles.
The objective of this study was to compare conventional and KRISP (k-space reordered by inversion time at each slice position) fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) sequences in high grade gliomas for artifact control, conspicuity of intracranial structures, and lesions as well as sensitivity to contrast enhancement. Artifacts were lower with the KRISP FLAIR sequence, and the conspicuity of all assessed structures and lesions was better. The degree of contrast enhancement was similar with T1-weighted and KRISP FLAIR sequences.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFFunctional neuroimaging techniques such as single-positron emission computed tomography (SPECT) and positron emission tomography (PET) offer considerable scope for investigating disturbances of brain activity in psychiatric disorders. However, the heterogeneous nature of disorders such as schizophrenia limits the value of studies that group patients under this global label. Some have addressed this problem by considering schizophrenia at a syndromal level, but so far, few have focussed at the level of individual symptoms.

Improved outcome in recent years has come about with better understanding of the disease and its sequelae. Medical therapy using H2 receptor antagonists, loperamide and growth hormone analogues has been found useful.

Aims: To determine whether, in first-episode schizophrenia, a longer duration of untreated psychosis (DUP) or of untreated illness (DUI) (DUP plus any prodrome) is associated with clinical variables that could mediate a poor prognosis.
Method: Clinical, social, neuropsychological and oculomotor function data on 53 patients with first-episode schizophrenia were related to the DUP and DUI.

As currently defined, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) encompasses a broad constellation of behavioural and learning problems and its definition and diagnosis remain controversial. The aetiology of ADHD is acknowledged to be both complex and multifactorial. The proposal considered here is that at least some features of ADHD may reflect an underlying abnormality of fatty acid metabolism.

Sociodemographic, psychiatric, medical and medicolegal data were recorded for all inpatients in both secure units. Patients in the medium secure unit for those of normal intelligence were older at the time of the study and at conviction for the index offence, more likely to have been admitted from the penal system, and more likely to suffer from a psychotic disorder, particularly schizophrenia or a mood disorder.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe administration of the omega-3 fatty acid eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) to a drug-naïve patient with schizophrenia, untreated with conventional antipsychotic medication, led to a dramatic and sustained clinical improvement in both positive and negative symptoms. This was accompanied by a correction in erythrocyte membranes of abnormalities in both n-3 and n-6 highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFAs). Therefore EPA is able to reverse the phospholipid abnormalities previously described in schizophrenia.

DEN1 WP genomic RNA was amplified into three overlapping fragments by RT-PCR. These fragments were assembled into a full-length cDNA clone in the yeast-E.

This was accompanied by a correction in erythrocyte membranes of abnormalities in both n-3 and n-6 highly unsaturated fatty acids and with reduced neuronal membrane phospholipid turnover, as evidenced by serial 31-phosphorus cerebral magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Using recently developed techniques of image segmentation, subvoxel registration and quantitation, analysis of serial high-resolution 3D cerebral MRI scans showed that, in the year before EPA treatment, cerebral atrophy was taking place and that this atrophy was reversed by six months of EPA treatment.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFIntroduction: A patient with severe intractable symptoms of schizophrenia was treated for 6 months with a fatty acid supplement, primarily as a test of the hypothesis that membrane phospholipid metabolism is abnormal in schizophrenia. His symptomatology was predominantly positive, consistent with an 'Active' syndrome thought to reflect a relative imbalance of left over right hemispheric activation. Longitudinal studies have previously shown changes in functional lateralisation with symptom remission in schizophrenia, hence this was examined at intervals over the 6-month period.

In schizophrenia reduction of the P300 amplitude is a robust statistical finding but with inconsistent evidence of symptom correlates and of lateral asymmetry. Here relations were examined with active and withdrawn syndromes which in other cognitive and electrophysiological measurement modalities have been associated with opposite functional asymmetries. A standard oddball detection task was used to elicit auditory evoked potentials from dextral DSM-IV schizophrenic patients.

Lateral ventricular volume asymmetries in schizophrenia were studied using high resolution 3D magnetic resonance imaging in conjunction with segmentation and quantitation techniques. Comparisons were made between two clinical syndromes that have been associated with opposite patterns of functional hemispheric activation, namely an active and a withdrawn syndrome. Ratios of both left to right ventricular volume and left to right ventricle-to-brain ratios differed significantly between the two groups.

Motor disturbance was assessed with rating scales designed to cover the full range of spontaneous and drug induced movement disorder. Only one person in the drug naive group showed evidence ofparkinsonism, a finding which contrasts with recent reports suggesting that spontaneous extrapyramidal signs may not be uncommon in such patients.

Technique 1 employs direct segmentation of the ventricles from both the scans using thresholding and contour extraction. Technique 2 operates on difference images produced by voxel based intensity subtraction of the baseline from the registered follow-up images.

More recently, an inability of schizophrenic subjects to inhibit reflexive saccades reliably has been shown. This study aimed to test the hypothesis that the latter dysfunction is part of the extended schizophrenia phenotype.
