Semiconductor or metallic character in single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) is developed because of their chirality and diameter. Depending upon the extent of these characters in a particular sample of SWCNT, various electronic and mechanical applications are formulated. In this work we used protein protected red emitting gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) to enhance the metallic character in SWCNTs through electron transfer induced by photonic excitation.

Balance between excitatory glutamate and inhibitory GABA neurotransmitter is essential and critical for proper development and functioning of brain. The effect of nanopores in porous gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) on excited-state double proton transfer (DPT) in [2,2'-bipyridyl]-3,3'-diol (BP(OH)2) in an aqueous environment is the main focus of the present work. DPT in BP(OH)2 is known to take place through two mechanisms. In a bulk environment, an open solvated molecule facilitates the process and emits at 460 nm whereas, in a confined situation, formation of a "water wire" between the prototropic centers leads to the transfer of protons.

Chronic microinflammation is a hallmark of many aging-related neurodegenerative diseases as well as metabolic syndrome-driven diseases. Recent research indicates that chronic caloric excess can lead to hypothalamic microinflammation, which in turn participates in the development and progression of metabolic syndrome disorders such as obesity, glucose intolerance, and hypertension. Additionally, it was recently shown that increasing age after young adulthood can cause hypothalamic microinflammation independently of nutritional status, mediating a central mechanism of systemic aging.

Background: Guanfacine (Intuniv) is a centrally active alpha-2A adrenergic agonist for the new indication of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. QTc (QTcF and QTcNi) was prolonged at both therapeutic (4 mg) and supratherapeutic (8 mg) doses of a thorough QT study even though guanfacine has had a safe clinical history of over 3 million prescriptions for the treatment of hypertension. Using a previously developed population pharmacokinetic model, an exposure-response (ER) model was successfully developed to describe guanfacine plasma concentrations and changes in heart rate (HR) and the QT interval. Guanfacine exposure was associated with small decreases in HR and a small prolongation of the population-corrected QT (QTcP) interval. Based on the final ER model for effect of guanfacine on HR, the estimated population typical decrease in HR would be 2.

The brain, in particular the hypothalamus, plays a role in regulating glucose homeostasis; however, it remains unclear whether this organ is causally and etiologically involved in the development of diabetes. Here, we found that hypothalamic transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) production is excessive under conditions of not only obesity but also aging, which are two general etiological factors of type 2 diabetes. Pharmacological and genetic approaches revealed that central TGF-β excess caused hyperglycemia and glucose intolerance independent of a change in body weight.

Purpose: Traditional management of a perianal abscess involves incision and drainage followed by packing of the cavity until healing by secondary intention is complete. The evidence supporting this is lacking however, and regular postoperative packing is time-consuming, painful and costly. The presence of antinutritional constituents in rapeseed protein products (RPI), such as polyphenols, phytates, allyl isothiocyanates, and glucosinolates, is a formidable constraint. The effect of antinutrient removal from rapeseed meal with an organic solvent mixture (methanol/acetone, 1:1 v/v, combined with an acid (hydrochloric, acetic, perchloric, trichloroacetic, phosphoric)) on the physicochemical and functional properties of RPI was investigated. The extraction resulted in a substantial reduction of antinutrients from RPI, especially polyphenols and phytates, with concomitant decreases in protein yield and solubility.

Dopamine functionalized carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) that can act as efficient photoinduced electron donor-acceptor systems depending on the pH of the medium have been synthesized. In acidic media, dopamine on CNPs exists as hydroquinone and serves as an electron donor while under alkaline conditions the corresponding quinone form of dopamine serves as a strong electron acceptor. Application of external NADH to the system can invert the donor-acceptor roles under alkaline conditions.

Solvatochromic absorption and fluorescence bands of a donor-acceptor dye have been utilised for following the micellisation and for probing the polarity of the aqueous homomicellar phase provided separately by cationic (cetyltrimethylammonimum bromide, CTAB and dodecyltrimethylammonimum bromide, DTAB) and anionic (sodium dodecyl sulphate, SDS) surfactant. Results indicate that for a low concentration of surfactant (below cmc) the dye forms a dimer in aqueous solution. In a micellar media, however, the dye exists as monomers.

Neural stem cells (NSCs) were recently revealed to exist in the hypothalamus of adult mice. Here, following our observation showing that a partial loss of hypothalamic NSCs caused weight gain and glucose intolerance, we studied if NSCs-based cell therapy could be developed to control these disorders. While hypothalamus-implanted NSCs failed to survive in mice with obesity, NF-κB inhibition induced survival and neurogenesis of these cells, leading to effects in counteracting obesity and glucose intolerance.
