Its etiology remains uncertain, its pathogenesis disputed and its treatment poor. Most medical treatment is based on ovulation suppression and inducing amenorrhoea. The usage of antibiotics for prevention of infection in surgical practice is taken into consideration with the most frequent pathogenic agents, which are isolated from the genital tract and their sensitivity to antibiotics, pharmacokinetic properties of the antibiotic-tissue penetration, duration of action, concentration (without any risk) and established clinical efficiency. The potential benefit from prophylactic antibiotic should always be balanced against the possible damage. The duration of prophylaxis should be as short as it could be, in order to avoid the danger for occurrence of resistant strains.
