The MPCETT: Assessing the Safety and Utility of Exercise Tolerance Testing in Children With Concussion Ages 6 to 12.

Objective: Treadmill test protocols for concussion assessment have been validated for patients aged 13 years and older; however, no evidence-based guidelines exist for younger children. We designed and assessed the safety and utility of the Morahan Pediatric Concussion Exercise Tolerance Test (MPCETT) for assessing exercise tolerance in symptomatic children (SC) and recovered, asymptomatic children (AC) from 6 to 12 years of age.

Design: Retrospective case series.

Ictal EEG in patients with autistic spectrum disorder and epilepsy.

Objective: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder frequently associated with epilepsy and epilepsy is a leading cause of death in ASD patients. Despite growing interest in genetic, neurophysiological and clinical overlaps, data on ictal electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings in ASD are lacking since behavioral disorders often make it difficult to obtain EEG recordings. We examined ictal EEG features in a consecutive series of patients with ASD and epilepsy.

Impact of eye clinic liaison officers: a qualitative study in UK ophthalmology clinics.

Objectives: To explore the impact of eye clinic liaison officers (ECLOs, also known as sight loss advisors) on the processes, functions and quality of ophthalmology clinics through the experiences of ophthalmology staff in the UK.

Design: Qualitative study.

Setting: UK hospital ophthalmology clinics.

Juvenile myoclonic epilepsy and narcolepsy: A series of three cases.

Objective: This paper sets out to demonstrate the coexistence of juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME) and narcolepsy that raises the possibility of a shared genetic predisposition to both conditions.

Methods: The electronic medical records (EMRs) were searched for narcolepsy and JME over 10years.

Results: We identified three young adult women diagnosed with JME in their teenage years, with myoclonic, generalized tonic-clonic, and absence seizure semiologies, along with psychiatric comorbidity, well managed on lamotrigine and/or levetiracetam.

Expectations for consultations and antibiotics for respiratory tract infection in primary care: the RTI clinical iceberg.

Background: Respiratory tract infection (RTI) is the commonest indication for community antibiotic prescriptions. Prescribing is rising and is influenced by patients' consulting behaviour and beliefs.

Aim: To build up a profile of the 'RTI clinical iceberg' by exploring how the general public manage RTI, visit GPs and why.

Tackling sensitive issues using a game-based environment: serious game for relationships and sex education (RSE).

Experiencing sexual coercion during adolescence can lead to adverse psychological and physical health outcomes for those affected. Eliminating such experiences is important for enhancing adolescent wellbeing, and the provision of good quality relationships and sex education (RSE) is needed. Engaging young people in sensitive subject matters in RSE can be challenging, and using Serious Gaming technology may support young people and educators in this process.

Stool submission by general practitioners in SW England - when, why and how? A qualitative study.

Background: We know little about when and why general practitioners (GPs) submit stool specimens in patients with diarrhoea. The recent UK-wide intestinal infectious disease (IID2) study found ten GP consultations for every case reported to national surveillance. We aimed to explore what factors influence GP's decisions to send stool specimens for laboratory investigation, and what guidance, if any, informs them.

Have the public's expectations for antibiotics for acute uncomplicated respiratory tract infections changed since the H1N1 influenza pandemic? A qualitative interview and quantitative questionnaire study.

Objective: To investigate the effect of the H1N1 influenza pandemic on the public's expectations for a general practice consultation and antibiotic for acute respiratory illness.

Design: Mixed methods.

Participants: Qualitative interviews: 17 participants with acute respiratory tract infection (RTI) visiting English pharmacies.

An organisation-wide approach to training community practitioners in breastfeeding.

A new self-study training programme was delivered to community practitioners as part of an organisation-wide breastfeeding training programme. Knowledge outcomes were measured before and after the training using the Coventry University Breastfeeding Assessment. Interviews with participants found the programme was well received and seen as a key way to ensure consistent evidence-based practice.

Staff training is an essential element of achieving the prestigious UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI) global standard for organisations seeking to provide services that support breastfeeding. A breastfeeding self-study training programme (workbook and DVD) was developed by Health Behaviour Research Limited and delivered to healthcare staff in primary care trusts (PCTs), children's centres and their maternity units. As part of this training knowledge outcomes are measured before and after the training using the CUBA (Coventry University Breastfeeding Assessment).

Exploring the relationship between children's knowledge of text message abbreviations and school literacy outcomes.

This paper presents a study of 88 British 10-12-year-old children's knowledge of text message (SMS) abbreviations ('textisms') and how it relates to their school literacy attainment. As a measure of textism knowledge, the children were asked to compose text messages they might write if they were in each of a set of scenarios. Their text messages were coded for types of text abbreviations (textisms) used, and the ratio of textisms to total words was calculated to indicate density of textism use.
