Bariatric surgery induces a decrease in areal bone mineral density (aBMD), but the long-term effect on trabecular and cortical volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD) has not been well assessed. The main aim of this 5-year longitudinal study was to investigate the changes following sleeve gastrectomy (SG) in aBMD, bone turnover markers and trabecular and cortical vBMD. Forty-five patients with obesity were assessed before and 1, 2 and 5 years after SG.

Article Synopsis
  • * This study investigates Haemoproteus parasites in 16 species of accipitriform raptors, using both morphological and molecular methods, resulting in the identification of two new species, including one named H. multivacuolatus n. sp.
  • * The findings reveal significant genetic divergence in the cytb sequences of these parasites, suggesting the need for new diagnostic methods to identify these unique and possibly under-recognized haemosporidian parasites.

Second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs) are persistent chiral pesticides used to control rodent populations. Raptors are protected species and may be exposed through the ingestion of rodents contaminated with SGARs. Commercial formulations of SGARs are a mixture of four stereoisomers (E1, E2, E3, E4): the cis- and trans-diastereoisomers are each a racemic mixture of two enantiomers.

Article Synopsis
  • Bariatric surgery, specifically sleeve gastrectomy (SG), causes bone loss, but the exact mechanisms remain unclear.
  • A study on 83 obesity patients tracked changes in bone mineral density (aBMD) and bone turnover markers at 1, 12, and 24 months post-surgery.
  • Findings indicated that bone turnover increased over time, with a significant decrease in aBMD primarily observed in the hip region, attributed mainly to weight loss rather than changes in specific biological markers like periostin, sclerostin, and semaphorin 4D.

Sleeve gastrectomy (SG) induces weight loss but its effects on body composition (BC) are less well known. The aims of this longitudinal study were to analyse the BC changes from the acute phase up to weight stabilization following SG. Variations in the biological parameters related to glucose, lipids, inflammation, and resting energy expenditure (REE) were concomitantly analysed.

Parasites have developed many strategies to ensure their development, multiplication, and dissemination, including the use of reservoir hosts that are often nondomesticated species. Despite drastic reductions in their populations, wild birds remain widespread worldwide and could constitute some of these reservoirs. We focused on the identification of wild bird species harboring parasite stages in their muscles.

Background: Speech disorders impact quality of life for patients treated with oral cavity and oropharynx cancers. However, there is a lack of uniform and applicable methods for measuring the impact on speech production after treatment in this tumor location.

Objective: The objective of this work is to (1) model an automatic severity index of speech applicable in clinical practice, that is equivalent or superior to a severity score obtained by human listeners, via several acoustics parameters extracted (a) directly from speech signal and (b) resulting from speech processing and (2) derive an automatic speech intelligibility classification (i.

Wildlife has recently been pinpointed as one of the drivers of dissemination of genes conferring resistances to clinically important antimicrobials. The presence of both extended-spectrum beta-lactamase- (ESBL) and carbapenemase-encoding genes has notably been reported in wild birds, that can act as sentinels of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) contamination but also as long-distance spreaders in case of migratory birds. Here, 424 wild birds brought to a rescue center in France were sampled over a 6-month period.

Context: Nowadays, clinical tools are available to evaluate the functional impact of speech disorders in neurological conditions, but few are validated in oncology. Because of their location, cancers of the upper aerodigestive tract directly impact patients' communication skills. Two questionnaires exist in French, the Speech Handicap Index (SHI) and the Phonation Handicap Index (PHI), but none are specifically validated for the head and neck cancer population.

Background And Objective: Geographic atrophy (GA) involves the progressive loss of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), photoreceptors, and choriocapillaris (CC). CC flow within a GA area is severely impaired in patients with atrophic age-related macular degeneration. The aim of this study was to compare GA area measured on optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) (CC nonperfusion area) and on fundus autofluorescence (FAF).

Introduction: When fundus examination is not possible, ultrasonography (US) is an accurate tool for the diagnosis of retinal tears (RT). The aim of this study was to describe the predominant location of RT, the factors influencing their location, and the vitreous status of eyes with RT using US.

Methods: A prospective study was conducted in all patients diagnosed with RT by B-scan US (Aviso, Quantel Médical, Clermont-Ferrand, France).

Purpose: Oral or oropharyngeal tumors degrade patients' speech quality because of their location. The treatment of these cancers also affects the functional outcomes, depending on type (surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy), volume resection (according the size of the tumor) or on the anatomical area treated, and the post-treatment delay. The aim of this work is to determine the factors influencing the chronic speech disorders (in terms of intelligibility and severity) of patients treated for an oral or oropharyngeal cancer.

Iridocorneal angle assessment is essential in glaucoma diagnosis and management, and gonioscopy remains the clinical reference standard for its evaluation. However, performance and interpretation of gonioscopy requires experience and has several limitations. Ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) and more recently anterior segment OCT (AS-OCT) and Scheimpflug camera have contributed to a better understanding of the mechanisms of angle-closure, screening of patients at risk for angle-closure glaucoma, and understanding of angle structures in secondary open angle glaucomas.

We present a case report of a 60-year-old white woman, found to have advanced angle closure glaucoma in the right eye and appositional closure for about half of the left eye and no glaucoma. The remaining angle of the left eye was open with localized heavy pigmentation of the ciliary body band and trabecular meshwork. Ultrasound biomicroscopy showed a ciliary body tumor displacing the iris root centripetally preventing angle closure.

Most people presenting with incident osteoporotic fractures are neither assessed nor treated for osteoporosis to reduce their risk of further fractures, despite the availability of effective treatments. We evaluated the effectiveness of published models of care for the secondary prevention of osteoporotic fractures. We searched eight medical literature databases to identify reports published between 1996 and 2011, describing models of care for secondary fracture prevention.

Background: Influenza intelligence in New South Wales (NSW), Australia is derived mainly from emergency department (ED) presentations and hospital and intensive care admissions, which represent only a portion of influenza-like illness (ILI) in the population. A substantial amount of the remaining data lies hidden in general practice (GP) records. Previous attempts in Australia to gather ILI data from GPs have given them extra work.
