Halophytes, such as species, are promising new foods and are consumed for their pleasant salty taste and nutritional value. Since is perishable, modified atmospheric packaging (MAP) can be a useful tool, in combination with proper temperature, to halt further quality degradation in this type of product. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of MAP, with or without refrigeration, to extend the shelf life of glasswort ( L.

Existing research on Latino cultural factors mainly focuses on gender and nationality, often overlooking sexual orientation and giving limited attention to the experiences of Latino sexual minority men in the United States of America (USA). This study addressed this gap by exploring how sexual minority men identify, describe and experience Latino cultural factors. Between April and December 2019, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 28 men (ages 18-40, 43% non-US-born) in the greater Miami, Florida area to explore their engagement in HIV prevention and behavioural health services.

Sexually themed events present a unique opportunity for scaling up pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to men who have sex with men (MSM). This study descriptively explored PrEP uptake among MSM who anticipated attending a week-long major South Florida sexually themed event and examined potential facilitators and barriers to PrEP engagement among potential attendees. Of the participating HIV-negative MSM (n = 96), 66.

Orotic acid (OA) is an intermediate metabolite of pyrimidine nucleotide biosynthesis and represents a minor diet constituent. The measurement of urinary orotic acid is useful in confirming the diagnosis of hereditary metabolic diseases. Moreover, it could be of interest to know how the physiological concentration of this metabolite changes in relation to different conditions of clinical normality.

Teicoplanin, a glycopeptide antibiotic commonly used to treat bacterial infections, was discovered to be active in vitro against SARS-CoV-2. The aim of this study was to assess the levels of teicoplanin and its components in a cohort of adult and pediatric SARS-CoV-2 patients, evaluating the effect of sex and age on analyte concentrations. The levels of AST, ALT and leukocytes were shown to be higher in females, while the C reactive protein was higher in males.

Background: About 35-45% of the global population is affected by iodine deficiency. Iodine intake can be increased through the consumption of biofortified vegetables. Given the increasing interest in wild edible species of new leafy vegetables due to their high nutritional content, this study aimed to evaluate the suitability of Swiss chard (Beta vulgaris ssp.

Background: Sexual minority men are disproportionately affected by HIV. Medical advances in HIV treatment have extended life expectancy, and as this group ages, medical and psychological challenges become more prominent. Older people with HIV experience a higher incidence of cancer and other comorbidities; these burdens along with sexual minority stress can strain coping resources and diminish health-related quality of life.

Abnormalities in the plasma amino acid and/or urinary organic acid profile have been reported in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). An imbalance between excitatory and inhibitory neuronal activity has been proposed as a mechanism to explain dysfunctional brain networks in ASD, as also suggested by the increased risk of epilepsy in this disorder. This study explored the possible association between presence of EEG paroxysmal abnormalities and the metabolic profile of plasma amino acids and urinary organic acids in children with ASD.

Rigorous randomized trials that test promising culturally centered treatments for Latino youth and families are needed. This study adds to the knowledge base by comparing the efficacy of Culturally Informed and Flexible Family Treatment for Adolescents (CIFFTA) to an Individually Oriented Treatment-As-Usual (ITAU) in its ability to retain Latino youth and families in treatment, reduce internalizing and externalizing child symptoms, and improve family functioning. CIFFTA uses an adaptive/flexible approach to deliver individual therapy, family therapy, and psycho-educational modules tailored to each family's unique clinical and cultural characteristics.

The biofortification of leafy vegetables with selenium (Se) is a good way to increase human dietary Se intake. In addition, selenium delays plant senescence by enhancing the antioxidant capacity of plant tissues, decreasing postharvest losses. We investigated the effects of selenium addition on the production and quality of sweet basil () leaves of two harvesting phases, hereafter referred to as cuts, during the crop cycle.

People with HIV experience elevated levels of co-occurring psychosocial concerns, which can interfere with HIV-related self-care behaviors, such as medication adherence. We recently developed transdiagnostic, integrated cognitive-behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing psychotherapy to address interrelated psychosocial problems (syndemics) that can interfere with medication adherence and self-care among people with uncontrolled HIV (i.e.

An accurate and specific gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) method was optimized to quantify specific polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in plasma and in erythrocyte membranes for clinical purposes. The developed and fully-validated method showed optimal linearity in addition to adequate results in terms of accuracy, intra-day and inter-day precision. By adopting the Matrix-Corrected Calibration approach on all the biological matrices tested, both the constant and the proportional errors of the developed analytical methodology were considered to assure that the method was not affected by matrix bias.

Succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase deficiency (SSADHD) is a rare autosomal recessive metabolic disorder of GABA catabolism. SSADH is a mitochondrial homotetrameric enzyme encoded by ALDH5A1 gene. We report the molecular characterization of ALDH5A1 gene in an Italian SSADHD patient, showing heterozygosity for four missense mutations: c.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is becoming the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the Western world. The mortality is very high, which emphasizes the need to identify biomarkers for early detection. As glutamine metabolism alteration is a feature of PDAC, its evaluation may provide a useful tool for biomarker identification.

A simple "one-pot" derivatization and liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) procedure was developed for GC-MS analysis of reduced glutathione (GSH) analysis in erythrocytes. The metabolite was extracted by 5% (w/v) TCA, the supernatant treated with ECF and ethanol-pyridine media, the derivative separated and detected by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry using a short non-polar capillary GC column at a high column-head pressure. Total analysis time was 11min.

Bioactive dietary agents have been shown to regulate multiple cancer hallmark pathways. Epidemiologic studies have linked consumption of vegetables, such as garlic and onions, to decreased incidence of cancer. Diallyl trisulfide (DATS), a bioactive compound derived from vegetables, has been investigated as an anti-cancer and chemopreventive agent.

The ability of some crops to accumulate selenium (Se) is crucial for human nutrition and health. Selenium has been identified as a cofactor of the enzyme glutathione peroxidase, which is a catalyzer in the reduction of peroxides that can damage cells and tissues, and can act as an antioxidant. Plants are the first link in the food chain, which ends with humans.

One of the goals for the development of more effective cancer therapies with reduced toxic side effects is the optimization of innovative treatments to selectively kill tumor cells. The use of nanovectors loaded with targeted therapeutic payloads is one of the most investigated strategies. In this paper superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) coated by a silica shell or uncoated, were functionalized with single-layer and bi-layer conjugated linoleic acid (CLA).

Brief Strategic Family Therapy (BSFT) for Adolescent Drug Abuse clinical trial of 480 adolescents boys and girls age 12 to 17 and their parents was designed to maximize the chance that a sufficient number of Hispanic and Black adolescents would be included to allow valid subgroup comparisons. Examination of measurement invariance is an important step to ensure valid analysis. Two construct areas important to the analysis of trial results, adolescent problem behaviors and family functioning showed a high degree of measurement invariance, which allowed valid comparisons of mean baseline differences across groups.
