Here we choose Au as representative coinage metal (Au, Ag, Cu) that shows strong structure-dependent surface-enhanced infrared absorption (SEIRA). Infrared spectra of octadecanethiol monolayers on films of different stages of morphologic development show effects that are characteristic for SEIRA, such as enhanced vibrational signals, Fano-type line shape, and adsorbate induced baseline shifts.

In accordance with atomic force microscopy results, spectra for Al indicate a clear island-like growth in the beginning followed by a transition to a continuous layer. In this approach, the strategy is to integrate suited computational tools with multi-spectroscopic measurements to identify specific signals for the characterization of the molecular probe with respect to the perturbation used and the environmental conditions applied. Physical evaporation of SiO and SiO(2) under ultra-high vacuum conditions was monitored in situ with infrared spectroscopy at frequencies between 450 cm(-1) and 5000 cm(-1).
