Anatomical variation of the pulmonary vessels poses challenges to thoracoscopic lung resection and may be associated with an increased risk of intraoperative bleeding and damage to pulmonary circulation. Herein, we reported a rare and dangerous variation as the partial anomalous venous drainage of the right upper lobe into the superior vena cava in a patient undergoing thoracoscopic lobectomy for management of lung cancer of right upper lobe. The preoperative identification of such variation by 3D computed tomography scan allowed to plan a safe and accurate resection, and to prepare additional strategies for overcome unexpected intraoperative bleeding.

  • Self-expanding Y-metal stents (SEMS) are useful for treating complex airway lesions, but their placement can be challenging; the study introduces a modified method called the Y reverse technique to improve stent insertion.
  • The research involved 15 patients with airway issues, where only those with specific conditions were treated using this new technique.
  • Results showed that the Y reverse technique enhanced respiratory function, increased mean survival times, and reduced procedure duration when compared to traditional methods, indicating it to be a safe and effective treatment for airway obstruction.

Nowadays, Thoracic Surgery is technologically advanced; therefore, it also focuses its attention on nursing care. The aim of the study is to evaluate the effect of the assessment of a dedicated team of nurses (DTN) in all onco-hematological patients undergoing VATS lobectomy for lung cancer on the outcome of the patient, preventing pressure injuries, reducing perioperative stress, duration of operations, complications, and hospital stay times. We performed a single-center observational retrospective study, including 31 DTN and 760 onco-hematological patients who underwent thoracic surgery between 30 October 2018 and 30 June 2023 at "Vanvitelli" University of Naples.

Objectives: Thrombocytosis is a clinical condition generally associated with poor prognosis in patients with cancer. Thrombocytosis may be present after lung cancer resection, but the clinical significance of thrombocytosis remains unclear. Herein, we evaluated whether postoperative thrombocytosis was a negative prognostic factor in patients undergoing thoracoscopic lobectomy for lung cancer.

Objectives: Primaquine is essential for the radical cure of Plasmodium vivax malaria and must be metabolized into its bioactive metabolites. Accordingly, polymorphisms in primaquine-metabolizing enzymes can impact the treatment efficacy. This pioneering study explores the influence of monoamine oxidase-A (MAO-A) on primaquine metabolism and its impact on malaria relapses.

  • Primaquine (PQ) is the primary medication used to eliminate dormant malaria stages and prevent relapses, though its effect on malaria gametocytes remains unclear.
  • Genetic variations in the CYP2D6 and cytochrome P450 reductase (CPR) enzymes can influence PQ metabolism, so a study was conducted on 100 malaria patients to assess these effects on gametocyte activity.
  • Results indicated that individuals with specific genetic mutations had a smaller reduction in gametocyte levels after treatment, suggesting that pharmacogenetics plays a significant role in malaria transmission potential during the initial treatment period.

Can civic-minded individuals fight against a pandemic? In this paper, we show that civic capital plays an important role when assessing the level of compliance with COVID-19 vaccination recommendations. Analyzing data on a large sample of municipalities from the Italian region of Lombardy, we show that the share of vaccinated individuals is significantly higher in municipalities with higher pre-determined levels of civic capital. These findings are robust to the possibility of spatial spillovers across neighboring municipalities.

Background: We evaluated the safety and feasibility of one-lung ventilation in obese patients undergoing thoracoscopic lobectomy and whether obesity affected peri- and postoperative outcomes.

Methods: This was a retrospective single center study including consecutive patients undergoing thoracoscopic lobectomy between October 2019 and February 2022. Obese patients were statistically compared to a control group to evaluate any differences in relation to one-lung ventilation and peri- and postoperative outcomes.

Purpose: Little is known about vaccine safety in inborn errors of immunity (IEI) patients during the current vaccination campaign for COVID-19. To better investigate the reactogenicity and adverse event profile after two, three, and four doses of mRNA vaccines, we conducted an observational, multicentric study on 342 PID patients from four Italian Referral Centres.

Methods: We conducted a survey on self-reported adverse reactions in IEI patients who received mRNA vaccine by administering a questionnaire after each dose.

Real-time tracking of epidemic helps governments and health authorities make timely data-driven decisions. Official mortality data, whenever reliable and available, is usually published with a substantial delay. We report results of using newspapers obituaries to "nowcast" the mortality levels observed in Italy during the COVID-19 outbreak between February 24, 2020 and April 15, 2020.

Article Synopsis
  • - Widespread resistance to current antimalarial drugs has sparked the urgent need for new effective treatments, leading researchers to explore drug repositioning as a cost-effective strategy.
  • - A computer-assisted drug repositioning approach identified seven promising drug candidates, with epirubicin being highlighted for further testing due to its strong effectiveness against both drug-sensitive and resistant malaria strains.
  • - Experimental validation revealed that epirubicin not only kills malaria parasites but also blocks their transmission, and further studies aim to understand its mechanism of action, suggesting it could be optimized for use in malaria treatment.

Cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes are involved in the biotransformation of chloroquine (CQ), but the role of the different profiles of metabolism of this drug in relation to recurrences has not been properly investigated. To investigate the influence of the CYP genotypes associated with CQ metabolism on the rates of early recurrences, a case-control study was carried out. The cases included patients presenting with an early recurrence (CQ-recurrent individuals), defined as a recurrence during the first 28 days after initial infection and plasma concentrations of CQ plus desethylchloroquine (DCQ; the major CQ metabolite) higher than 100 ng/ml.

A pilot study has been carried out with the aim of evaluating the impact of updated imaging techniques (CT and MRI) versus "simple" examinations (tomography, X-rays, US, and nuclear medicine) on the anticipatory anxiety of the patients, as well as on the radiologist-patient relationship. Ninety consecutive patients undergoing diagnostic imaging modalities were examined according to the following schedule: 1) preliminary interview and anxiety assessment according to HRSA; 2) diagnostic imaging investigation, and 3) filling out an "ad hoc" questionnaire. The collected data have been divided into two groups: the "simple" group (52 patients submitted to X-rays, tomography, US, and nuclear medicine), and the "complex" group (38 patients submitted to CT and MRI).
