Despite its significant decline in the general population, smoking remains endemic and highly prevalent among people with mental disorders. The impact of smoking-attributable morbidity on life expectancy is significant since, in comparison to the general population, people with severe mental disorders have a 15-20-year reduction in life expectancy. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 1015 people with mental disorders through personal interviews.

In a previous study, tobacco plants, transformed with a sense construct of the 57K domain of the replicase gene of tobacco rattle virus (TRV), provided resistance against genetically distant isolates of the virus. In this work, 57K-specific siRNAs were detected with RT-qPCR solely in the resistant line verifying the RNA-silencing base of the resistance. The integration sites of the transgene into the plant genome were identified with inverse-PCR.

Oxidative damage and immune-inflammatory activation have been suggested to play a role in depression. The purpose of the study was to investigate possible associations and interactions of these pathophysiological mechanisms in geriatric depression by determining the levels of plasma 8-iso-prostaglandin F(2alpha) (8-iso-PGF(2alpha)) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in elderly depressed individuals. Subjects over 60 years of age with depression and controls were randomly selected from a population in the community after screening with the Geriatric Depression Scale.

Delusional disorder, somatic type (DDST) is a rare psychiatric disorder and the treatment is mostly based on observations, due to the lack of well-organized studies. Initially, antipsychotics and especially pimozide were considered to be the pharmacological approach of choice but, subsequently, tryciclic anti-depressants and selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs) were also suggested to be effective, implicating the serotonergic system in the pathophysiology of the disorder. We present the case of a female with DDST, who responded to aripiprazole-mirtazapine combination, a finding that is in accordance with the initial approach of this disorder as a part of the schizophrenic spectrum, but also supports the hypothesis of serotonin dysfunction in DDST.

The deinstitutionalization of the mentally ill and their shift into the community lead the police to play an important role in the management of acute psychiatric states. This study examines the attitudes of the Greek police towards the mentally ill, and the problems that arise during the transfer of mentally ill people to psychiatric emergency departments. Results highlight policemen misperceptions, and the difficulties encountered during transport procedures, which may be attributed to insufficient knowledge about mental illness and lack of training, respectively.

Background: Alterations in folate, vitamin B12 and homocysteine plasma levels have been associated with aging, neuronal development and depressive symptomatology. Nevertheless, the associations are not strong enough to suggest the use of these parameters in every day practice for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes.

Objectives: The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between plasma folate, vitamin B12 and homocysteine in depressive states in the elderly.
