Mucoromycotina 'fine root endophytes': a new molecular model for plant-fungal mutualisms?

The most studied plant-fungal symbioses to date are the interactions between plants and arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi of the Glomeromycotina clade. Advancements in phylogenetics and microbial community profiling have distinguished a group of symbiosis-forming fungi that resemble AM fungi as belonging instead to the Mucoromycotina. These enigmatic fungi are now known as Mucoromycotina 'fine root endophytes' and could provide a means to understand the origins of plant-fungal symbioses.

Untangling the Complexities of Processing and Analysis for Untargeted LC-MS Data Using Open-Source Tools.

Untargeted metabolomics is a powerful tool for measuring and understanding complex biological chemistries. However, employment, bioinformatics and downstream analysis of mass spectrometry (MS) data can be daunting for inexperienced users. Numerous open-source and free-to-use data processing and analysis tools exist for various untargeted MS approaches, including liquid chromatography (LC), but choosing the 'correct' pipeline isn't straight-forward.

LNA blockers for improved amplification selectivity.

LNA-containing oligonucleotides bind DNA more tightly than standard DNA, so they can interact with targeted sequences and affect multiple processes. When a desired DNA is present at low concentrations relative to nearly identical undesired DNAs, LNAs can block amplification of unwanted DNAs. Using a short rAAV and synthetic DNA sequence as a model, we studied the length, number, and positioning of LNA bases to improve blocker effectiveness.

Application of a Model of Workforce Resilience to the Education Workforce: Expanding Opportunities for Support.

The current study analyzed 502 responses from members of the education workforce on the Resilience at Work (RAW) scale and other measures of health and job satisfaction as part of an initiative offering training and technical assistance to support student and staff well-being. A latent profile analysis using scores on components of the RAW identified three resilience profiles: lower, moderate, and higher capacities for resilience. Profiles were differentiated across components related to resilience capacity including alignment of work and personal values, level of social support, and ability to manage stress.

Acute physiological and psychophysical responses to different modes of heat stress.

New Findings: What is the central question of this study? What are the profiles of acute physiological and psychophysical strain during and in recovery from different modes of heating, and to what extent do these diminish after repeated exposure? What is the main finding and its importance? Mode of heating affects the strain profiles during heat stress and recovery. Exercise in the heat incurred the greatest cardiovascular strain during heating and recovery. Humid heat was poorly tolerated despite heat strain being no greater than in other heating modes, and tolerance did not improve with multiple exposures.

Comparing the effect of different sample conditions and spectral libraries on the prediction accuracy of soil properties from near- and mid-infrared spectra at the field-scale.

The prediction accuracy of soil properties by proximal soil sensing has made their application more practical. However, in order to gain sufficient accuracy, samples are typically air-dried and milled before spectral measurements are made. Calibration of the spectra is usually achieved by making wet chemistry measurements on a subset of the field samples and local regression models fitted to aid subsequent prediction.

A crossover control study of three methods of heat acclimation on the magnitude and kinetics of adaptation.

New Findings: What is the central question to the study? Are primary indices of heat adaptation (e.g., expansion of plasma volume and reduction in resting core temperature) differentially affected by the three major modes of short-term heat acclimation, that is, exercise in the heat, hot water immersion and sauna? What it the main finding and its importance? The three modes elicited typical adaptations expected with short-term heat acclimation, but these were not significantly different between modes.

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in 13 Urban Public Schools: Mixed Methods Results of Barriers, Facilitators, and Implementation Outcomes.

Trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT) is an evidence-based intervention to treat Post-traumatic Stress Disorder among youth ages 3-18 years. In this pilot study, 31 clinicians in 13 urban public schools received TF-CBT training to improve access to a high-quality trauma treatment for youth in need. A mixed methods design was used to assess implementation barriers, facilitators and outcomes to examine initial feasibility, acceptability, and appropriateness of TF-CBT delivered in school settings.

Improving warfarin therapy through implementation of a hospital-based pharmacist managed clinic in Jamaica.

Background: Pharmacist managed warfarin clinics can improve the anticoagulation status of non-valvular patients. The first of such services was implemented at the Cornwall Regional Hospital in Jamaica in 2013.

Objectives: To assess the anticoagulation control of patients on warfarin therapy over six months in the pharmacist managed warfarin clinic at Cornwall Regional Hospital.

Enhancing the Relevance and Effectiveness of a Youth Gambling Prevention Program for Urban, Minority Youth: A Pilot Study of Maryland Smart Choices.

Youth with problem gambling behaviors are susceptible to serious academic, behavioral, and mental health consequences including school failure, criminal involvement, and depression. Coupled with increased exposure to gambling formats, issues related to youth gambling have been deemed a serious public health issue requiring increased prevention efforts. However, the literature is limited in terms of evidence-based gambling prevention programs warranting the development of The Maryland Smart Choices Program (MD-Smart Choices), a gambling prevention program for middle and high school youth.

Effects of 10 days of separate heat and hypoxic exposure on heat acclimation and temperate exercise performance.

Adaptations to heat and hypoxia are typically studied in isolation but are often encountered in combination. Whether the adaptive response to multiple stressors affords the same response as when examined in isolation is unclear. We examined ) the influence of overnight moderate normobaric hypoxia on the time course and magnitude of adaptation to daily heat exposure and ) whether heat acclimation (HA) was ergogenic and whether this was influenced by an additional hypoxic stimulus.

Magnetic Nanoparticles: New Perspectives in Drug Delivery.

Background: The study of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) for drug delivery has recently seen a surge of interest even though the first studies were conducted as early as in the seventies. Despite this, there are still gaps in the knowledge of the field, implicating the complexities in designing the ideal MNP for drug delivery. The large surface area of MNPs and the ability to manipulate with an externally applied magnetic field render the MNP a good candidate for targeted delivery of drugs.

Cerebrospinal Fluid proNGF: A Putative Biomarker for Early Alzheimer's Disease.

The discovery of biomarkers for the onset of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is essential for disease modification strategies. To date, AD biomarker studies have focused on brain imaging and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) changes in amyloid- β (Aβ) peptide and tau proteins. While reliable to an extent, this panel could be improved by the inclusion of novel biomarkers that optimize sensitivity and specificity.

A prospective cohort study of intrathecal versus epidural analgesia for patients undergoing hepatic resection.

Background: The aim of this prospective observational study was to compare peri/post-operative outcomes of thoracic epidural analgesia (TEA) versus intrathecal morphine and fentanyl patient-controlled analgesia (ITM+fPCA) for patients undergoing a hepatic resection (HR).

Method: Patients undergoing elective, one-stage, open HR for benign and malignant liver lesions, receiving central neuraxial block as part of the anaesthetic, in a high-volume hepato-pancreato-biliary unit, were included in the study. The primary outcome measure was post-operative length of stay (LoS).

Epidural anaesthesia and analgesia for liver resection.

Although epidural analgesia is routinely used in many institutions for patients undergoing hepatic resection, there are unresolved issues regarding its safety and efficacy in this setting. We performed a review of papers published in the area of anaesthesia and analgesia for liver resection surgery and selected four areas of current controversy for the focus of this review: the safety of epidural catheters with respect to postoperative coagulopathy, a common feature of this type of surgery; analgesic efficacy; associated peri-operative fluid administration; and the role of epidural analgesia in enhanced recovery protocols. In all four areas, issues are raised that question whether epidural anaesthesia is always the best choice for these patients.

Socialization of Emotion and Offspring Internalizing Symptoms in Mothers with Childhood-Onset Depression.

This study examines how mothers with and without a history of childhood-onset depression respond to their 3-9 year-old children's emotions. Mother-child dyads included 55 offspring of mothers with a history of childhood-onset depressive disorders and 57 offspring of never-depressed mothers. Mothers with a history of childhood depression were less likely than were control mothers to respond in supportive ways to their children's negative emotions and were more likely to magnify, punish, or neglect their children's negative emotions.

Emotion regulation strategies and later externalizing behavior among European American and African American children.

Children's early emotion regulation strategies (ERS) have been related to externalizing problems; however, most studies have included predominantly European American, middle-class children. The current study explores whether ERS use may have differential outcomes as a function of the mother's ethnic culture. The study utilizes two diverse samples of low-income male toddlers to examine observed ERS during a delay of gratification task in relation to maternal and teacher reports of children's externalizing behavior 2 to 6 years later.

'Tamponade' following cardiac surgery: terminology and echocardiography may both mislead.

Objective: Echocardiography is widely considered the gold standard for the diagnosis of tamponade. While a relatively common complication of cardiac surgery in adults, determining whether haemodynamics are compromised by a pericardial collection early post-operatively can be difficult. The aim of the current study was to determine the nature and magnitude of the diagnostic challenge posed by cardiac tamponade following cardiac surgery.

Late-onset deep prosthetic infection following mesh repair of inguinal hernia.

Background: The use of prosthetic biomaterials for the primary repair of inguinal hernias is now commonplace. Late-onset deep-seated prosthetic infection can be an unexpected complication.

Methods: The literature from a Medline search relating to the biology of mesh in the setting of hernia repair is discussed.
