Background: Antitumor activity of paclitaxel is based on promotion of abnormal microtubule (MT) assembly but it is also considered to have significant pro-inflammatory and anti-angiogenic effects in vivo and thus may cause vascular dysfunction.

Augmentation index (AIx), a marker of the number of aortic wave reflections (AWRs), is influenced not only by the magnitude of incident and reflected pressure waves but also by the time of return. A new triangulation method has been developed, enabling us to better quantify AWRs and to determine their sex differences, which may relate to body size or pulse pressure (PP) amplification, measured from the brachial PP-to-carotid PP (B/C) ratio. With the use of pulse wave analysis, AWRs were evaluated in 51 women and 72 men treated for hypertension and studied in relationship to age, blood pressure, and pulse wave velocity.

Several studies compared blood pressure (BP) at home (HBP) with ambulatory BP (ABP), but using different devices, which contribute to differences in measured BP. A novel dual-mode device allowing ABP and HBP monitoring (Microlife WatchBPO3) was validated according to the European Society of Hypertension International Protocol and used to compare the two methods. In the validation study, 33 subjects were assessed with simultaneous BP measurements taken by 2 observers (connected mercury sphygmomanometers) 4 times, sequentially with 3 measurements taken using the tested device.

Objective: The extent to which atherosclerosis is accelerated in chronic inflammatory diseases is not established. We compared preclinical atherosclerosis in rheumatoid arthritis with diabetes mellitus, a known coronary heart disease equivalent.

Methods And Results: Endothelial function, arterial stiffness, carotid intima-media thickness, and analysis of atheromatous plaques were examined in 84 rheumatoid arthritis patients without cardiovascular disease versus healthy controls matched for age, sex, and traditional cardiovascular disease risk factors, as well as in 48 diabetes patients matched for age, sex, and disease duration with 48 rheumatoid arthritis patients.

Background: In elderly patients traditional cardiovascular (CV) risk factors are poorly correlated with mortality and few data are available on determinants and consequences of supra-ventricular arrhythmia. In a cohort of 331 hospitalized elderly patients (mean age+/-SD=85+/-7 years), we assessed which CV characteristics were associated with all-cause mortality.

Hypertension is a major risk factor for a wide range of cardiovascular diseases and is typically identified by measuring blood pressure (BP) at the brachial artery. Although such a measurement may accurately determine diastolic BP, it does not accurately reflect systolic BP. An electronic device for home monitoring has been developed (Visomat Comfort 20/40) that estimates the individual's arm circumference by measuring the cuff filing volume and makes an adjustment of measured BP taking into account the estimated arm circumference. Systemic arterial stiffness is an indicator of cardiovascular disease and an independent marker of morbidity and cardiovascular mortality.
