Background: Patients use social media on a daily basis, and they can be restricted under the new Dutch Compulsory Mental Healthcare Act.

Aim: To describe which social media behaviors of psychiatric patients were rightfully restricted by health care professionals and reveal underlying reasons.

Method: We searched for law cases of the courts of first instance and decisions of boards on patients’ complaints from implementation of the new act (2020-2023) about patients’ behaviors related to social media in two open source databases.

Prevalence of Adverse Childhood Experiences in Adolescents with Special Educational and Care Needs in the Netherlands: A Case-File Study of Three Special Educational and Care Settings.

To date, Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) in adolescents with special educational and care needs have received little attention as an important risk factor for their behavioral, emotional, and learning problems. This study provides insight into ACE prevalence and family risk factors in three Dutch special educational and care settings for vulnerable school-aged youth. 268 adolescents (10-18 years old) with severe and persistent problems at individual and family level, from a special educational setting (setting 1;  = 59), a residential care setting (setting 2;  = 86) and an alternative educational setting (setting 3;  = 123) were included.

Purpose: Hepatic fibrosis develops as a response to chronic liver injury, resulting in the formation of fibrous scars. This process is initiated and driven by collagen-producing activated myofibroblasts which reportedly express high levels of platelet derived growth factor receptor-β (PDGFRβ). Identification of patients is important, and the EU is currently implementing a digital Patient Summary to provide physicians with essential information concerning an European patient. [A male with perianal skin abnormalities].

A 23-year-old man who has sex with men with perianal pain and blood loss showed erosive perianal plaques. PCR swab of the plaque was positive for Treponema pallidum and herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 2. Patient was diagnosed with primary or secondary syphilis with a co-infection of HSV and was successfully treated with benzathine benzylpenicillin.

Single Domain Antibodies as Carriers for Intracellular Drug Delivery: A Proof of Principle Study.

Antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) are currently used for the targeted delivery of drugs to diseased cells, but intracellular drug delivery and therefore efficacy may be suboptimal because of the large size, slow internalization and ineffective intracellular trafficking of the antibody. Using a phage display method selecting internalizing phages only, we developed internalizing single domain antibodies (sdAbs) with high binding affinity to rat PDGFRβ, a receptor involved in different types of diseases. We demonstrate that these constructs have different characteristics with respect to internalization rates but all traffic to lysosomes.

Moral distress and ethical climate in intensive care medicine during COVID-19: a nationwide study.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has created ethical challenges for intensive care unit (ICU) professionals, potentially causing moral distress. This study explored the levels and causes of moral distress and the ethical climate in Dutch ICUs during COVID-19.

Methods: An extended version of the Measurement of Moral Distress for Healthcare Professionals (MMD-HP) and Ethical Decision Making Climate Questionnaire (EDMCQ) were online distributed among all 84 ICUs.

Mechanism of action of 4-substituted phenols to induce vitiligo and antimelanoma immunity.

Monobenzone is a 4-substituted phenol that can induce vitiligo and antimelanoma immunity. We investigated the influence of the chemical structure on the biological activity of a series of structurally related 4-substituted phenols. All phenols inhibited cellular melanin synthesis, and eight of ten phenols inhibited tyrosinase activity, using the MBTH assay.

The efficacy of kinesiology taping for improving gross motor function in children with cerebral palsy: A systematic review.

Background: Kinesiology taping is an increasingly popular technique used as an adjunct to physiotherapy intervention for children with cerebral palsy (CP), but as yet we do not have a review of the available evidence as to its efficacy.

Objectives: To critically appraise and establish best available evidence for the efficacy of truncal application of kinesiology taping combined with physiotherapy, versus physiotherapy alone, on gross motor function (GMF) in children with CP.

Method: Seven databases were searched using the terms CP, kinesio taping and/or kinesiology tape and/or taping, physiotherapy and/or physical therapy and GMF.

Molecular simulation workflows as parallel algorithms: the execution engine of Copernicus, a distributed high-performance computing platform.

Computational chemistry and other simulation fields are critically dependent on computing resources, but few problems scale efficiently to the hundreds of thousands of processors available in current supercomputers-particularly for molecular dynamics. This has turned into a bottleneck as new hardware generations primarily provide more processing units rather than making individual units much faster, which simulation applications are addressing by increasingly focusing on sampling with algorithms such as free-energy perturbation, Markov state modeling, metadynamics, or milestoning. All these rely on combining results from multiple simulations into a single observation.

A decade of offering a Healing Enhancement Program at an academic medical center.

An increased focus has been given to improving the patient experience in health care. This focus has included placing value in a patient-centric, holistic approach to patient care. In the past decade, the Healing Enhancement Program was developed at 1 large medical center to address this focus through implementation of such integrative medicine services as massage, acupuncture, and music therapy to holistically address the pain, anxiety, and tension that hospitalized patients often experience.

Coupled diffusion in lipid bilayers upon close approach.

Biomembrane interfaces create regions of slowed water dynamics in their vicinity. When two lipid bilayers come together, this effect is further accentuated, and the associated slowdown can affect the dynamics of larger-scale processes such as membrane fusion. We have used molecular dynamics simulations to examine how lipid and water dynamics are affected as two lipid bilayers approach each other.

At a nanometre scale, the behaviour of biological fluids is largely governed by interfacial physical chemistry. This may manifest as slowed or anomalous diffusion. Here we describe how measures developed for studying glassy systems allow quantitative measurement of interfacial effects on water dynamics, showing that correlated motions of particles near a surface result in a viscosity greater than anticipated from individual particle motions.

GROMACS 4.5: a high-throughput and highly parallel open source molecular simulation toolkit.

Motivation: Molecular simulation has historically been a low-throughput technique, but faster computers and increasing amounts of genomic and structural data are changing this by enabling large-scale automated simulation of, for instance, many conformers or mutants of biomolecules with or without a range of ligands. At the same time, advances in performance and scaling now make it possible to model complex biomolecular interaction and function in a manner directly testable by experiment. These applications share a need for fast and efficient software that can be deployed on massive scale in clusters, web servers, distributed computing or cloud resources.

Methods: A 1-y observational study was performed of neonates admitted to an NMCU in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Nasopharyngeal samples were collected for the detection of respiratory viruses and bacteria by real-time PCR (RT-PCR).

Membrane-induced bundling of actin filaments.

Dynamic interplay between the plasma membrane and underlying cytoskeleton is essential for cellular shape change. Spatial organization of actin filaments, whose growth generates membrane deformations during motility 1, phagocytosis 2, endocytosis 3, and cytokinesis 4, is mediated by specific protein-protein interactions that branch, crosslink, and bundle filaments into networks that interact with the membrane. Although membrane curvature has been found to influence binding of proteins with curvature-sensitive domains 5, the direct effect of membrane elasticity on cytoskeletal network organization is not clear.

Faster strain fluctuation methods through partial volume updates.

Elastic systems that are spatially heterogeneous in their mechanical response pose special challenges for molecular simulations. Standard methods for sampling thermal fluctuations of a system's size and shape proceed through a series of homogeneous deformations, whose magnitudes can be severely restricted by its stiffest parts. Here we present a Monte Carlo algorithm designed to circumvent this difficulty, which can be prohibitive in many systems of modern interest.
