Purpose: The purpose of this study is to assess the prevalence of osteoporosis and fragility fractures in patients with liver cirrhosis (LC) and determine the associated risk factors, evaluating the usefulness of FRAX as a screening method to identify patients at a higher risk of fracture.

Methods: This was a cross-sectional study. Demographic, clinical, and analytical data were collected in a randomized sample of LC patients attending the Hepatology Department of a university hospital.

Background & Aims: Prophylactic administration of platelets and fresh frozen plasma (FFP) has been recommended in patients with cirrhosis with low platelets and/or prolonged international normalized ratio (INR) without scientific evidence to support this practice. In this analysis, we evaluated the use of prophylactic administration of blood products in outpatients with cirrhosis undergoing endoscopic band ligation (EBL).

Methods: This is a multicenter retrospective analysis of consecutive EBL procedures in patients with cirrhosis at 4 hospitals in Spain from 01/2010-01/2017.

Purpose: The prevalence of adrenal insufficiency (AI) in patients with decompensated liver cirrhosis is unknown. Because these patients have lower levels of cortisol-binding carrier proteins, their total serum cortisol (TSC) correlates poorly with free serum cortisol (FC). Salivary cortisol (SaC) correlates better with FC.

Unlabelled: The presence of cirrhosis increases the mortality of patients with peptic ulcer bleeding (PUB). Both acute variceal bleeding (AVB) and PUB are associated with substantial mortality in cirrhosis. This multicenter cohort study was performed to assess whether the mortality of patients with cirrhosis with PUB is different from that of those with AVB.

In urban Maroua, Cameroon, improved drinking water sources are available to a large majority of the population, yet this water is frequently distributed through informal distribution systems and stored in home containers (canaries), leaving it vulnerable to contamination. We assessed where contamination occurs within the distribution system, determined potential sources of environmental contamination, and investigated potential pathogens. Gastrointestinal health status (785 individuals) was collected via health surveys.

While the goal of African pastoralists is health and longevity of herd and household, some of their management strategies appear to counter this long-term goal. Pastoralists in the far north region of Cameroon, for example, do not always remove chronically sick animals from their herds, even though chronic diseases, such as brucellosis, are contagious and have the potential to cause fertility problems in the herd. We used ethnographic and epidemiologic methods to understand why pastoralists do not remove chronically sick animals and whether their management strategies have an impact on herd fertility.

Background: Our purpose was to evaluate the results of the promotion of blood donation in patients undergoing stem cell transplantation (SCT) and to compare it with this promotion in remaining in-patients.

Patients And Methods: The hematologist and the blood bank staff informed the patient undergoing SCT about the need for transfusions. Donors were selected for blood or platelet donation.

Several N-(4-phenoxyphenyl)pyridinecarboxamides and N-(4-phenoxyphenyl)pyrazinecarboxamides were synthesized from commercially available material, and their ovicidal activities against Cydia pomonella (L.) were tested. Some of the tested products showed a moderate activity when <24-h-old eggs were sprayed using a Potter tower.

Defective ADP-induced aggregation was observed in in vitro streptokinases(SK)-treated normal platelet-rich plasma. Classic haemophilia and normal platelet poor plasma (PPP) treated with SK inhibit the aggregation of washed platelets; plasmin-treated normal human serum also shows an inhibitory effect on platelet aggregation. However, SK-treated von Willebrand plasmas do not inhibit the aggregation of washed platelets.
