The global interest in edible insects as sustainable protein sources raises concerns about the bioaccumulation of contaminants, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), to problematic levels. Understanding the accumulation dynamics of PAHs in edible insects is highly relevant due to the widespread sources and toxicological profiles; however, the bioaccumulative potential of PAHs in edible insects is unexplored. This study examined the uptake and elimination dynamics of benzo(a)pyrene (B(a)P), a representative and carcinogenic PAH, in yellow mealworm larvae (YMW, Tenebrio molitor).

The increasing global food demand is threatening the sustainability of agrifood production systems. The intensification of agricultural practices, with inadequate use of pesticides and fertilizers, poses major challenges to the good functioning of agroecosystems and drastically degrades the soil quality. Nanotechnology is expected to optimize the current farming practices and mitigate some associated impacts.

The foreseen increasing application of copper-based nanomaterials (Cu-NMs), replacing or complementing existing Cu-agrochemicals, may negatively impact the soil microbiome. Thus, we studied the effects on soil microbiome function and composition of nano copper oxide (nCuO) or copper hydroxide NMs in a commercial (Kocide®3000) or a lab-synthetized formulation (nCu(OH)) or bulk copper hydroxide (Cu(OH)-B), at the commonly recommended Cu dose of 50 mg(Cu)kg soil. Microbial responses were studied over 28 days in a designed indoor mesocosm.

This work presents the synthesis of CoSb one-dimensional (1D) thermoelectric nanomaterials using electrodeposition under galvanostatic conditions and polycarbonate membranes as a template (50 nm diameter pores). Cyclic voltammetry measurements have been performed to get preliminary information on the electrochemical reduction process of the involved species. Different current density values in the range 1-4 mA cm have been applied, leading to the formation of nanowires (NWs) and micro- and nanomushroom caps, as evidenced by the scanning electron microscopy and scanning transmission electron microscopy investigations.

The current study presents research about electrodeposition in relation to electrospinning PCL wires on a Zr substrate and loading the coating with vancomycin. The structural composition of the coatings was investigated via FT-IR analysis. The morphology evaluated using scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, for the composition (SEM-EDS), evidenced the presence of the polymer wires, with and without drug vancomycin loading.

Research on nanotechnology with applications in agriculture has been gathering attention because it may achieve a good balance between agricultural production and environmental integrity. Among the vast nanomaterials, layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are a promising solution for supplying crops with macro- and/or micronutrients. Still, little is known about their safety implications for non-target organisms, such as soil invertebrates.

This paper presents research about the embedding and release of gentamicin from an electrochemical deposition of polypyrrole from ionic liquids such as choline chloride on TiZr bioalloy. The electrodeposited films were morphologically investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with an EDX module, and polypyrrole and gentamicin were both identified using structural FT-IR analysis. The film's characterization was completed with an evaluation of hydrophilic-hydrophobic balance, with electrochemical stability measurements in PBS and with antibacterial inhibition.

Engineered nanoparticles released into surface water may accumulate in sediments, potentially threatening benthic organisms. This study determined the toxicokinetics in Chironomus riparius of Ag from pristine silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs), a simulating aged Ag NP form (AgS NPs), and AgNO as an ionic control. Chironomid larvae were exposed to these Ag forms through water, sediment, or food.

In this paper, Cu nanocolumnar structure electrodes are synthetized using a clean and easy-to-scale-up direct-current magnetron sputtering (DC-MS) technique for non-enzymatic glucose sensing. The nanocolumnar structure increases the active surface area of the deposit, with the nanocolumns showing a mean size diameter of 121.0 nm ± 27.

Climate changes and metal contamination are pervasive stressors for soil ecosystems. Mercury (Hg), one of the most toxic metals, has been reported to interact with temperature. However, compared to aquatic biota, little is known about how temperature affects Hg toxicity and bioaccumulation to soil organisms.

Conventional and herbal active principles can be combined in a beneficial harmony using their best features and compensating for the certain weaknesses of each. The study will answer the question, "how can willow bark extract () or ivy leaf extract () influence the photoprotective, skin permeation and hydration properties of Bioactive Lipid Nanocarriers (BLN) loaded with UV-filters and selected herbals?". BLN--UV-filters were characterized for particle size, zeta potential, thermal behavior, entrapment efficiency and drug loading.

The aim of the present investigation is the electrochemical deposition of polypyrrole films from choline chloride-based ionic liquids at various potential, period times and simultaneously an indomethacin embedding and release. The electrodeposition films were performed on CoCr commercial type Wirobond C (WBC) and, Heraenium CE (Hera) using as electroprocedures for deposition cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. The morphology of obtained films was investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

Background: Non-value agrifood byproducts are rich in biomolecules such as proteins and polysaccharides, and possess film-forming ability, motivating their use in the development of biodegradable plastics. This work studied the feasibility of using locust bean milling-derived dust (LBMD) as a source of biomolecules suitable for developing biodegradable plastics.

Results: LBMD is composed of 56% protein, 28% carbohydrate, 10% moisture, 6% lipid, and 2% ash.

PI3K/Akt signaling is one of the most frequently dysregulated pathways in cancer, including triple-negative breast cancer. With considerable roles in tumor growth and proliferation, this pathway is studied as one of the main targets in controlling the therapies' efficiency. Nowadays, the development of nanoparticle-drug conjugates attracts a great deal of attention due to the advantages they provide in cancer treatment.

Activated reduced graphene oxide (a-rGO) is a material with a rigid 3D porous structure and high specific surface area (SSA). Using variation of activation parameters and post-synthesis mechanical treatment we prepared two sets of materials with a broad range of BET (N2) SSA ∼1000-3000 m2 g-1, and significant differences in pore size distribution and oxygen content. The performance of activated graphene as an electrode in a supercapacitor with KOH electrolyte was correlated with the structural parameters of the materials and water sorption properties.
