During infection with Chlamydia trachomatis, CD8(+) T cells are primed, even though the bacteria remain confined to a host cell vacuole throughout their developmental cycle. Because CD8(+) T cells recognize antigens processed from cytosolic proteins, the Chlamydia antigens recognized by these CD8(+) T cells very likely have access to the host cell cytoplasm during infection. The identity of these C.

This study sought to delineate the impact of the rate pressure product on intraluminal Doppler velocity measurements and to determine the relation between poststenotic vasodilator reserve and percent luminal obstruction in coronary vessels. Twenty patients with single-vessel coronary disease were studied prior to coronary angioplasty and at follow-up 6 months later. Intracoronary velocity reserve after administration of adenosine was measured distal to the stenosis with a Doppler-tipped guide wire and was compared to quantitative coronary angiography and adenosine myocardial perfusion scintigraphy.

Persistent immunity against Leishmania: infections in humans is mediated predominantly by CD4(+) T cells of the Th1 phenotype. Herein we report the expression cloning of eight Leishmania: Ags using parasite-specific T cell lines derived from an immune donor. The Ags identified by this technique include the flagellar proteins alpha- and beta-tubulin, histone H2b, ribosomal protein S4, malate dehydrogenase, and elongation factor 2, as well as two novel parasite proteins.

The purpose of this registry was to document the safety and efficacy of elective deployment of the NIROYAL stent (Boston Scientific SCIMED, Maple Grove, Minnesota) in coronary arteries. This was a prospective, multi-center international registry. NIROYAL stents (9, 16, 25 and 32 mm-long) were manually crimped onto coronary balloons and deployed in de novo or restenotic lesions in 165 male and female patients with angina pectoris and a reference vessel diameter of 2.

Background: Coronary stenting improves outcomes compared with balloon angioplasty, but it is costly and may have other disadvantages. Limiting stent use to patients with a suboptimal result after angioplasty (provisional angioplasty) may be as effective and less expensive.

Methods And Results: To analyze the cost-effectiveness of provisional angioplasty, patients scheduled for single-vessel angioplasty were first randomized to receive primary stenting (97 patients) or balloon angioplasty guided by Doppler flow velocity and angiography (523 patients).

The present study evaluates the use of intracoronary velocity measurements by Doppler guidewires for assessing coronary obstructions. In vitro experiments were performed in a flow model using acrylic phantoms of coronary stenoses with different configurations (stenosis area: 56%, 75% and 89%; stenosis length: 1 and 5 mm; stenosis border: tapering or abrupt). Nonpulsatile laminar flow conditions of a test fluid were established at flow rates ranging from 0.

Background: The main long-term complication of percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) is restenosis that occurs in 30-50 percent of all primary successful cases. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the predictive value of changes in plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) activity and of thallium dipyridamole perfusion imaging performed 3 months after successful angioplasty. All patients were asymptomatic at evaluation.

Background: Intracoronary stenting reduces the rate of restenosis after angioplasty in patients with new coronary lesions. We conducted a prospective, randomized, multicenter study to determine whether intracoronary stenting, as compared with standard balloon angioplasty, reduces the recurrence of luminal narrowing in restenotic lesions.

Methods: A total of 383 patients who had undergone at least one balloon angioplasty and who had clinical and angiographic evidence of restenosis after the procedure were randomly assigned to undergo standard balloon angioplasty (192 patients) or intracoronary stenting with a Palmaz-Schatz stent (191 patients).

Background And Hypothesis: Recent studies demonstrate the feasibility of coronary flow reserve measurements by transesophageal echocardiographic (TEE) Doppler recordings of coronary sinus or left anterior descending (LAD) coronary artery flow velocity for detecting stenoses of the LAD artery. This study compares coronary flow reserve measurements by Doppler TEE with thallium-201 (201Tl) single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) in patients with proximal single-vessel LAD stenosis.

Methods: Nineteen patients with various degrees of LAD stenosis (mean area stenosis 71 +/- 24%; range 24-96%) were studied.

Background: The aim of this prospective, multicenter study was the identification of Doppler flow velocity measurements predictive of clinical outcome of patients undergoing single-vessel balloon angioplasty with no previous Q-wave myocardial infarction.

Methods And Results: In 297 patients, a Doppler guidewire was used to measure basal and maximal hyperemic flow velocities proximal and distal to the stenosis before and after angioplasty. In 225 patients with an angiographically successful percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA), postprocedural distal coronary flow reserve (CFR) and percent diameter stenosis (DS%) were correlated with symptoms and/or ischemia at 1 and 6 months, with the need for target lesion revascularization, and with angiographic restenosis (defined as DS > or = 50% at follow-up).

LeIF, a gene homologue of the eukaryotic initiation factor 4A was first described as a leishmanial antigen that induced a Th1-type T cell response in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from leishmaniasis patients. Moreover, the interferon (IFN)-gamma production by PBMC was found to be interleukin (IL)-12 dependent. Herein, we characterize the effects of LeIF on cytokine production and expression of surface molecules by normal human monocytes as well as by monocyte-derived macrophages and dendritic cells (MoDC).

Measurement of global left ventricular function is important in the follow-up of cardiac patients and is a good prognostic indicator in acute cardiac situations. We compared quantitative measurements of global left ventricular function made with radionuclide angiography (RNA) and contrast cardiac ventriculography (CVG) to visual semiquantitative estimates from two-dimensional echocardiographic images (2D-echo). Three hundred and thirty-nine consecutive patients who underwent RNA were assessed with 2D-echo within 3 months.

Lymphocytes regulate the immune response by secreting cytokines that control the activity and function of effector cells. Chemokine subsets are ideal candidates for recruitment of specific effector cells to inflammatory sites or to other lesions because of their selective chemoattractant activities. Given the Th1-Th2 model of immune regulation and the particular role of leukocyte recruitment for the outcome of the response, we analyzed whether a subset of human chemokines is associated with a specific type of immune response.
