- Most gastric cancers are linked to chronic infection with Helicobacter pylori strains, particularly the cagA-positive ones, and about 10% also contain the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV).
- The CagA protein from H. pylori is phosphorylated, which enhances its oncogenic activity by disrupting the normal function of the SHP2 phosphatase.
- This study identifies SHP1 as a phosphatase that can counteract CagA, and shows that EBV infection promotes hypermethylation of the SHP1 promoter, leading to lower SHP1 expression and potentially increasing gastric cancer risk.
