Background: Patients with multiple co-morbidities undergoing cataract surgery are at risk of hypoxia and hypercarbia secondary to the rebreathing of the accumulated carbon dioxide under the surgical drapes. They are also at risk of fire accidents due to the hyperoxic condition secondary to oxygen supplementation.

Objectives: The main aim of the study was to determine the lowest level of hemoglobin oxygen saturation while providing medical air in comparison with oxygen.

Introduction: Airway management of infants is challenging, and video laryngoscopes can help reduce intubation attempts and improve glottic visualization. In this study, we compared the Besdata video laryngoscope with the Miller laryngoscope in neonates and infants 6 months of age.

Methods: After obtaining informed written consent from the parents, we randomized 80 infants scheduled for elective surgery requiring endotracheal intubation into two groups, Group DL and Group VL.

Article Synopsis
  • Using cognitive aids like checklists can greatly enhance patient care quality, leading to fewer complications and deaths.
  • A study was conducted on emergency cesarean sections, comparing a baseline assessment of 65 procedures to a post-intervention phase after educating staff on a 22-step checklist.
  • Results showed an increase in compliance from 78.80% to 92.48%, indicating that the training helped staff recognize the importance of each checklist item and improve overall patient care practices.

Background And Aims: Postoperative sore throat (POST) can be as high as 42% in supraglottic devices. LMA® Protector™ is a novel second-generation laryngeal mask airway (LMA) with Cuff Pilot™ technology that allows continuous cuff pressure monitoring. Elevated cuff pressure is a risk factor for POST in supraglottic devices, so we conducted this study to determine whether continuous cuff pressure monitoring can alleviate POST.

Background And Aims: The role of preoperative pharmacological prophylaxis in preventing aspiration pneumonitis under general anesthesia (GA) in patients at low risk of aspiration pneumonitis is still under debate. We addressed the need for routine pharmacological aspiration prophylaxis in at-risk population by assessing the change in gastric volume using ultrasound with and without pharmacological acid aspiration prophylaxis.

Material And Methods: A single-center, randomized double-blinded trial, with 200 adult patients scheduled for elective surgical procedures under GA, were randomized into a prophylaxis group, in which the patients received oral famotidine and metoclopramide, and a no prophylaxis group, in which the patients did not receive any prophylaxis.

Article Synopsis
  • This study examines how combining ketamine with propofol affects airway collapse in children during MRI sedation.
  • Fifty-eight children were split into two groups: one receiving only propofol and the other receiving a mix of ketamine and propofol.
  • Results showed that the combination significantly reduced upper airway collapse compared to propofol alone, as seen through MRI measurements at various anatomical levels.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the effectiveness of Microcuff oral RAE tubes compared to uncuffed tracheal tubes in children undergoing cleft palate surgery, focusing on reducing tube exchange and migration rates.
  • Involved 100 children, randomly assigned to either uncuffed (50) or Microcuff (50) groups, measuring outcomes like tube exchange rate, ventilation parameters, and leak pressure.
  • Results showed no tube exchanges in the Microcuff group versus 19 exchanges in the uncuffed group, indicating better performance of Microcuff tubes, although both types had similar ventilatory parameters and postoperative airway morbidity rates.

Glanzmann thrombasthenia (GT) is a congenital disorder inherited autosomal recessively, caused by deficiency of platelet membrane glycoprotein IIb-IIIa complex leading to defective platelet aggregation, and manifesting as mucocutaneous bleeding. Parturients with GT requiring emergency cesarean section are at high risk for perioperative bleeding complications. The anesthetist should be prepared with the necessary measures to control bleeding.

Background And Aims: Shivering is common after spinal anesthesia in patients undergoing cesarean section. Various drugs have been used for its prevention. The primary aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of adding a small dose of fentanyl intrathecally (12.

Background And Aims: Retrograde transillumination technique has been found helpful for performing direct and video laryngoscopy by better identification of glottis. The usefulness of this technique during flexible videoscopy by novices has not been evaluated. So, we aimed to compare the retrograde transillumination and conventional technique of flexible videoscopy by novices.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated whether using a Frova introducer with a C-MAC video laryngoscope would shorten the intubation time for trainee anesthesiologists compared to standard methods.
  • A total of 140 adult participants were randomly split into two groups: one used the Frova introducer while the other did not, focusing on key outcomes like intubation time and success rate.
  • Results showed that intubation with the Frova introducer took a bit longer but significantly reduced the need for external laryngeal maneuvers, though the overall success and redirection rates remained similar between the groups.
