A T MRI probe based on a self-assembled coordination cage with four iron(III) centers acts as a host for the hydrolysis product of the gold(I) anticancer drug, Au(PEt)Cl. H NMR characterization of the gold complex encapsulated within the diamagnetic Ga(III) analog of the coordination cage is consistent with loss of chloride to give aquated gold complex, most likely [Au(PEt)(OH)] within the cage. The gold complex undergoes pH-dependent speciation changes in the Ga(III) cage and is released at mildly acidic pH from both the Ga(III) and Fe(III) cages.

A new highly emissive pH-responsive near-IR active digital probe was designed and synthesized. The probe is based on a bisbenzothiazole motif with a highly vulnerable hydrogen unit attached in an intramolecular fashion. The probe produced a large Stokes shift which was observed to be highly pH dependent.

A novel fluorescent Mg probe was developed based on a small molecule-protein hybrid. This probe enables subcellular targeting, long-term imaging, and high selectivity for Mg over Ca. Using ratiometric fluorescence microscopy with a co-localized standard fluorophore, the variations in intranuclear Mg concentrations during mitosis could be visualized.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are produced by every aerobic cell during mitochondrial oxidative metabolism as well as in cellular response to xenobiotics, cytokines, and bacterial invasion. Superoxide Dismutases (SOD) are antioxidant proteins that convert superoxide anions (O) to hydrogen peroxide (HO) and dioxygen. Using the differential in the level of oxidative stress between normal and cancer cells, SOD mimetics can show an antitumoral effect and prevent oxaliplatin-induced peripheral neuropathy.
