Adverse effects of large artery stiffening are well established in the systemic circulation; stiffening of the proximal pulmonary artery (PPA) and its sequelae are poorly understood. Case: During dissection of the upper limb of a cadaver in preparation for a first-year anatomy course, an extensor indicis proprius (EIP) variant was discovered with its muscle belly extending distal to the extensor retinaculum and beyond what has been previously described in the literature.

Conclusion: EIP is commonly used as a tendon transfer for extensor pollicis longus rupture. Few anatomic variants of EIP have been reported in the literature, but such variants should be considered because of their consequences to the success of tendon transfer and potential implications for diagnosis of an otherwise unexplained mass of the wrist.

Embryology and congenital malformations play a key role in multiple medical specialties including obstetrics and paediatrics. The process of learning clinical embryology involves two basic principles; firstly, understanding time-sensitive morphological changes that happen in the developing embryo and, secondly, appreciating the clinical implications of congenital conditions when development varies from the norm. Visualising the sequence of dynamic events in embryonic development is likely to be challenging for students, as these processes occur not only in three dimensions but also in the fourth dimensions of time.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) occurs when plaque accumulates in the arterial system and obstructs blood flow. Narrowing of the abdominal aorta and the common iliac arteries due to atherosclerotic plaques restricts blood supply to the lower limbs.
